Kirkwood is a small town in southwestern Missouri, United States. The population was 1,651 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area. The community was named for Colonel John Kirkwood, a Union general during the American Civil War who helped lead the Union army to victory in that conflict. In 1871, J.F. Smith and his brother-in-law Wm. Henshaw developed a cotton plantation near Kirkwood as an experimental breeding ground for new varieties of cotton. The two men are credited with developing what became known as "Kirkwood Cotton." The Smiths added cattle to their property in 1915 and began raising horses there in 1916; these activities gave the community its name of "Hogtown." In 1918, they built a one-story blacksmith shop on Main Street, which continues to serve as functionary shop today. KFC founder Colonel John Fenton opened his first restaurant there in 1924; it remains open today as "Fenton's." Over time, other large businesses have joined KFC including Lowe's Home Improvement Store (now Macy's) and Pohl's ElectronicsShops (now Best Buy). Today, many local businesses participate in the mall's commercial district - including several professional offices and retail stores - making it one of the most active shopping areas in central Missouri.

Kirkwood, Missouri is a small town in the Ozarks of southern Missouri. It was founded in 1838 by James Kirkwood, a member of the territorial legislature. The town declined during the Civil War and afterwards experienced a rapid growth in population due to agricultural production and mining activity. Today, Kirkwood is a small but vibrant community with a diverse cultural heritage. The first people to live in what is now Kirkwood were members of the Shawnee tribe who traveled through this area on horseback hunting game. In 1838, Scottish-born James Kirkwood came to this region and began farming and trading with the local Indians. He built his first house here in 1839. By 1840, he had four homes here: one for himself and three others for his family. In 1861, Confederate General John Sibley burned down most of downtown Kirkwood while attempting to capture Union General Sterling Price; few buildings were destroyed but many people were injured or killed as result of the raid. The burning reinforced national sentiment against Confederates and helped hasten Kansas’ admission into the United States as an independent state less than two months later. After Kansas’ admission into the United States, more people flocked to Iowa City for jobs opportunities available there then they did to St Joseph when it became known as the Gateway State because of its position at Eastern Oklahoma’s border with Illinois (then called Indiana). However, during World War I civilians from St Joseph took up arms against military forces operating from nearby Beaumont Army Airfield which led eventually to their city's destruction by German bombers on April 6th 1915 when 1% of all civilian deaths caused by aerial bombing occurred within 100 miles of any major U.S city center
Kirkwood was founded in 1834 by a group of Latter Day Saint Mormons who arrived from upstate New York. The town grew quickly, and soon boasted a large store, three churches, and a school. In 1868, the Missouri General Assembly designated Kirkwood as the capital of the newly formed State of Missouri. The town continued to grow and prosper, becoming an important cultural center for the area. In 1907, Kirkwood was incorporated as a city.
