Kirkwood is a town in Butler County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Kirkwood was John Kirkwood and his family who arrived in 1827. The town was named for Captain James Kirkwood, who had been captain of one of the surveyed routes when he founded Butler County. In 1881, the Kansas Pacific Railroad built a line through Kirkwood and other towns in Butler County, changing the character of the county so most people were removed toKansas City or Omaha by 1890. Kirkwood experienced some periodic growth from about 1900 until it reached its current size around 1990 due to strong agricultural production and an increase in highway travel into this area adjacent to Interstate 65. However, with recent population growth (due mainly to professional and business relocation), there has been little stability or continuation of these patterns over time; as a result, development has generally followed an uncontrolled trend away from agriculture towards services and industry. Today Kirkwood still contains many farms that are used for growing corn, soybeans and other crops on large acreages; but such activities are no longer evenly balanced across all portions of the community because they have become more expensive relative to other businesses which have sprung up nearby since 1990 due to continued heavy highway traffic into this area adjacent to I-65

During World War II, various coast guard units served throughout America under various names including: artillery battalion (H), anti-submarine warfare detachment (AQS 2), radar squadron 3rd group (R3G 3), destroyer Squadron 5th group (DSV 55) and chaplain unit 4th class (CHU 4). After hostilities ended, these units were reorganized into special coast guard detachments which functioned as patrols and security forces along America’s coasts until discontinued in 1953 by Executive Order 9982. Kirkwood, Missouri is a small town in the Ozarks of central Missouri. The population was 1,827 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Springfield-Springfield metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Kirkwood was John Kirkwood who came to the area in 1839. He and his family were farmers, but also built a cabin on the hill above present-day Kirkwood Elementary School. In 1850, John's son Daniel moved to Kirkwood from Illinois and started aJoinery shop on Main Street. Daniel's son Alex later opened an insurance company there which became one of the biggest in town. In 1861, a group of men from Illinois sent by Governor Abraham Lincoln to scout for new lands west of Springfield came through Kirkwood on their way to Indian Territory and encountered Sioux Indians living near modern day Lebanon County. The men decided not to explore further and returned home without making any new land purchases or settlements. However, this event has been cited as contributing to the growth of downtown Kirkwood over time and its current appearance as one of Springfield's most vibrant neighborhoods today. The first school in Kirkwood was built on South Main Street (now North Main Street) in 1875 by Jno Ewing Jr., an early settler who had come from Maryland with his father when he purchased 640 acres (248 hectares) around what is now downtown Springfield from Hennepin County for $1 million dollars (). A second school was built soon after on West Union Avenue (now North Washington Boulevard). This school served both schools that were located east of present day Market Place until 1951 when it merged with Central High School #2 which had been organized four years earlier into one large building south of Market Place across Elm Street frompresent day Central Library and across two blocks north of US Highway 64/I-24which forms its southern border today.. Kirkwood is located in St. Louis County, Missouri, and was founded in 1836. The town was named for John Kirkwood, a pioneer settler. In the 1830s, Kirkwood was part of the area that became Hannibal. In 1836, Governor Thomas J. Reid issued a proclamation announcing the organization of a county within St. Louis County called Kirkwood County. The first county commissioners were chosen from local landholders and residents of Hannibal who voted on November 3, 1836. By February 1, 1837 all but two of the commissioners had been appointed and two were already gone when the legislature granted $10,000 to be used for public improvements in Kirkwood County including roads and bridges. The first courthouse in Kirkwood was built on Main Street in 1840 by contractor George Waring with assistance from Governor James Kappes Jr.. It served as the court house until1849 when it burned down and was replaced by a new courthouse built on State Road A1A at what is now known as Crossing Road.
