Kirkwood, Missouri is a small town in Warren County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,841 at the 2010 census. It lies along I-435 about 12 miles (19 km) east of St. Louis and 17 miles (27 km) west of Kansas City. Kirkwood is one of the oldest towns in Warren County and was first settled in 1814. The town name is composed of the words "kirk" meaning "a place to dwell or an encampment" and "wood" which means forest or wooded area. The Kirkmans were pioneers who arrived in the area in the early 1800s. A post office called Kirkwood was established in 1817, and remained open until it was discontinued in 1912. In 1903, a school was built by John Muhlenberg and named for his father-in-law, David Kirkman. The present school building was completed in 1918 and is located on Main Street near its original location on Blackwater Creek. In 1980, a fire destroyed most of the stockyards that had been used for many years to produce cattle by the Kirkmans and other farmers around the community. Reconstruction began soon after with new structures being erected including a farm house designed by architects from Topeka, Kansas as well as a large barn that became home to local basketball teams during their early years there before being replaced by a more modern facility around 1990. Today's economy leans heavily towards agriculture but some manufacturing activities have taken off over recent decades; particularly contributions from engineering firms associated with heavy equipment production operations at nearby factories such as Deere & Co.; Nutrilite; Phelps Dodge; Honeywell International Inc.; Continental Tire Corp.; Ford Motor Co.; among others Today's population of around 1,500 people continues to rely largely upon agriculture for economic activity while also enjoying access to quality education which has helped contribute to their strong sense of identity within their community

Kirkwood, Missouri is a small town located in Webster County, Missouri. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It has been home to the Kirkgraft paper mill since 1872 and the Kirkgraft warehouse since 1923. The mill closed in February of 2018 after much investment by its current owner and layoff of 350 workers. The first settlers in Kirkwood were two families from Illinois who arrived in 1836. They hunted and gathered food until they found a cabin near where present-day Highway 6 intersects Highway K. The family built their log cabin on a hill overlooking the river that flows through the town. In 1840, John Smeaton settled near present-day Kirkwood with his wife and three children. He started a farm and raised chickens, pigs, cattle, wheat, oats and other crops until he died in 1865. His wife continued to live there until her death in 1906. In 1872, James Wertz purchased land around the future Kirkgraft paper mill from John Smeaton for $10 per acre ($140 per square mile). At that time it was one of the largest tracts of land within miles of any school or township in Webster County. Wertz began construction on what would become known as "the mills." Wertz had originally planned to build four mills but only two were completed due to competition from other companies operating around this time period including US Steel and Phelps Dodge Corporation (Phelps Dodge would later merge into American Steel). The remaining two mills became known as "the Kirkwoods" because their founders – JF Kirkwood Sr., JR., JM Kirkwood Jr., CF Kirkwood – lived close by (John Sr.) while constructing them. Today's buildings on Main Street reflect these original mills which operated between 1872-1974: One building is now used as an auto parts store; another is used as an office; finally, one still stands vacant next to the old post office building which housed both stores when it was built in 1912-1914
