In 1945, the United States Air Force deployed a gift to the people of Kirkwood, Missouri. The gift was a Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress Bomber for use in World War II. The bomber had been donation by Major General Curtis LeMay and many other individuals in the military and community. The plane was brought to Kirkwood on February 24th, 1945 and inaugurated with a flyover by General George C. Marshall. After its first flight, the bomber began its tour of duty in Europe as part of Operation Crossroads. In 1947, it returned to the United States and served as an experimental aircraft at Wright-Patterson AFB until 1958 when it was retired from service. It is now on display at the National Museum of American History in Washington D.C.. The B-17 Bomber has played an important role in history and continues to be used today by members of the USAF and USMC for flights over America’s capital city. The RAF also deployed Gift History in 1946 when they sent Spitfires, Hurricane Mk VIs and Mustangs to participate in the Battle of Midway. In 1957, the USAF started using Gift History to describe their deployments of F-86 Sabre jets. This term was later replaced by 'Aircraft' which is still in use today.
