Kirksville is a town in Jefferson County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,853 at the 2010 census. It is part of the St. Louis metropolitan area. Kirksville was founded in 1837 and named for Samuel Kirk, an early settler. The first store in Kirksville opened in 1838, and the first post office was established in 1839. The town was incorporated on November 7, 1840. In 1861, Confederate General James Longstreet's army passed through Kirksville on its march from Cairo to join Robert E Bee's Union army at Pea Ridge; as a result, most of Kirksville's male residents enlisted with the Confederacy and left for war. Most women and children stayed behind to help run the stores and homes during the fighting. After the war ended, many of these men returned to Kirksville and rebuilt their businesses; however, some remained away because they could not support themselves financially without military pay or because they chose not to fight again after seeing too much death and destruction on both sides of the conflict. Kirksville is a small town located in Jackson County, Missouri, United States. The population was 2,711 at the 2010 census. Kirksville was founded in 1838 by Daniel Kirk and his family as a sawmill settlement. The first store in Kirksville was built on the banks of the White River. In 1840, John W. Kirk opened a general store and began to sell goods from his farmstead on Main Street. Kansas Territory was organized in 1846 and Kirksville became part of that territory. On November 1, 1850, the General Assembly passed an act incorporating Kirksville as a city. The first mayor of Kirksville was Prentice Sabin. On December 12, 1865, Mayor James Craine surrendered Fort Donelson to Confederate forces during the Union Army's Attack on Corinth Heights. In 1865, Civil War veterans arrived in Kirksville to start businesses that would continue into the 21st century such as Dixie Lumber Company and Homebuilders Supply Company (later known as Ace Hardware). In 1892–1893, JF Kirk constructed what is today called downtown Kirksville around what is now Fourth Street and North Avenue; this helped to make Kircsvilp more visible within Jackson County and led to its growth over time. One of the most famous residents of KirksVILLE during this time period was author Fannie Farmer who lived at 902 First St until her death in 1966
