The Kirksville National Guard was founded on November 15, 1861. The Kirksville National Guard is the oldest National Guard in Missouri and has served our state since 1861. The Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States (MOLLUS) was ratified by Missouri voters on December 5, 1872. The Kirksville National Guard's insignia is a small shield with a blue sunburst in the center and "KIRKSVILLE" above it. The Kirksville National Guardsmen have fought in many wars including World War I, World War II, and Iraq/Syria. They are also present today to support local law enforcement efforts as well as provide security for events such as funerals or school assemblies. In March of 2018, members of the Kirksville NationalGuard responded to an active shooter call at a high school in Aberdeen County. Four soldiers were killed and twenty-six were injured during this incident.

Kirksville is located in the Ozarks of Missouri and is a small town that has played an important role in the community for many years. Kirksville was founded in 1819 by Joshua Kirby and his wife Sarah. The Kirby family had been living in this area for many years, and they were the first to settle here. They started a grocery store and built a home on the present site of Kirksville Elementary School. In 1828, David Kirby married Sarah's sister, Anna Maria Prucelli. AnnaMaria was from nearby Olivette, MO, and her husband David had moved there from Virginia when he was fourteen. The Kirby ownership of Kirksville continued until1854 when it passed to their son-in-law John Fenton Jr. It remained under Fenton family ownership until 1958 when it became part of the town of Kirksvilleowne which is now within the city limits of Springfield, MO
The United States National Guard is a military organization of the United States. The guard was created on September 15, 1792 as an arm of the militia to provide security for President George Washington and his family during their stay in New York City. It was not until 1795 that the National Guardsmen were organized into battalions under the command of Brigadier General John Sullivan. On November 15, 1924, the National Guard was reorganized into Combat Arms Regiments (CARs). On December 1, 1961, CARs were redesignated as Infantry Regiments (IRs), and on June 30, 1966 IRs were redesignated as Artillery Regiments (ARs). The current name for the national guard is "Army National Guard". The first mass purchase of U.S. military equipment by the Army National Guard was made in 1898 when it purchased field artillery weapons from European contractors. These purchases totaled $1 million and included cannons, rifles, machine guns and mortars. In 1903-1905, Army procurement officers traveled to Europe to assess army requirements for new munitions products and also investigated how best to communicate with MP's who would be using these new arms in combat operations at home. This trip helped put American armed forces on an international stage which would continue throughout World War I and World War II. Army growth remained slow due primarily to budget restrictions set by Congress which limited Army spending to 2% of all federal government revenue between 1915-1917; however this freeze did not last long as Appropriations Committees began increasing appropriations each year until 1920 when Congress passed a law authorizing a 4% increase in fiscal year 1921 appropriations despite reports that Armies could not meet future Budget targets without more than 5%. A total appropriation increase of 24% took place from 1921-1924 resulting in 1 million dollars being added to armories across country including 7 thousand rifles being procured for use by state militias! However during World War II there were major increases in botharmy procurement ($35 billion)and armor acquisition programs ($51 billion) making US Armed Forces one ofthe largest theater commanders in history! As America entered World War II they had fully mobilized with over 80%of men available only 25 miles from their homes! All citizens must register with Selective Service when they turn eighteen years old so that service can begin!

The racial makeup of the town was 97% White; 0% African American; 0% Native American; 0% Asian; 0% Pacific Islander; 1% from other races; and 2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latinoof any race were 3%.
