Kirksville is a small town in Worth County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,718 at the 2010 census. Kirksville is part of the Springfield, MO Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1854 by Major Elijah Kirkpatrick and his family. It was named after Captain James Fenton Kirkshire (1786-1855), an officer in the Union army during the American Civil War. In 1872, J.F.Kirkpatrick & Sons built a mill on the River Ark which still flourishes today as Kirksville Mill No. 2 LLC The first post office in Kirksville opened in 1855 and remained open until it closed on September 14, 1907. The first settler in what is now Kirksville was John Kapp who arrived with his family from Maryland in 1857. He erected a log cabin near present day Main Street and started to grow corn and other crops around this time In 1865, Colonel Robert Ewing bought 8 acres of land east of present day Main Street for $50 from James Fenton Kirkpatrick Sr., one of JFKirkpatrick's sons Ewing developed this land into what is now known as Winton Park which includes parts of today's Main Street andold US 64 highway . This area became known as "Banks Landing" because bank robber Jesse Banks crashed his car here while fleeing sentence at Fort Madison jail near Cairo (now Springfield) on October 10th 1865 In 1870 Colonel Ewing sold 4 more acres to Isaac Blair who set up a blacksmith shop on the property before dying in 1872 A few years later Phebe Tiller bought much of Bank Landing including what is now Main Street for $425 from Isaac Blair's widow Mable Tiller According to some sources Phebe had married Abram Tillery III but according to others this date may be inaccurate as they only owned 7% of Bank Landing when she purchased it After her purchase she made many alterations including enlarging her home which can still be seen today behind her old house next to Interstate 70 . By 1880 most acreage within modern day Kirksville had been developed with several stores, churches and homes being built . By 1890 there were over twenty residents living in Banks Landing

Kirksville, Missouri is a small town in Ozarks County, Missouri, US. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield-Springfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Kirksville post office opened in 1856 and continued until it closed on July 14, 2009. The town was named after General David Kirks, who fought in the Mexican-American War and received an award from Mexico for his bravery. In 1868, John Crouch founded a grocery store in the town which became one of the most successful businesses in Kirksville. The store remained open until it closed its doors on November 16, 1984. Crouch also served as mayor from 1951 to 1957 and from 1967 to 1979. In 1865, Isaac Moulton built what is now known as Riverside Drive into a road leading eastward from Kirksville towards Rome. This road later became known as US 40 (now I-70). A sawmill operated by Sibley & Goodrich located along this road beginning in 1875 began producing logs that were used to build homes around Kirksville. By 1886, when US 40 was rerouted near present day Springfield, lumber had become so abundant thatbuilding timber roads started becoming popular among developers throughout the region because they could avoid having to purchase trees directly from the live woods where they were being harvested In 1897 James Wiegand erected what is now called Main Street into a two blocks long street running northeast from US 40 between Center Road and Elm Street . Wiegand's business soon grew into one of the largest general stores in eastern Missouri due to his wide selection of goods and his ability to order items online or over the phone . In 1926 Wiegand sold his store to H J Smith who added another floor onto it which still stands today as Main Street resident hall . That same year also sawthe opening of Oneida Park Race Course on current day Broadway Avenue northeast of Main Street . Today Oneida Park remains one of America's oldest full time championship race tracks with more than $1 million in prize money awarded annually
