In 1865, he built the first cooperage in Kennett and started to grow coffee. By 1887, The Old Hickory Coffee House had become the largest coffee roaster in Kansas City.
Kennett, Missouri is a town located in Johnson County, Missouri. The population was 2,693 at the 2010 census. The name Kennett comes from the Cherokee word "kenna", meaning "a wild corn." It was first settled by Native Americans in 1837. The first store and post office were established in 1839. A cotton gin was built in 1840 and a sawmill in 1845. In 1855, a school was erected in the village of Kennett and named after General George Washington Kennett. The population of Kennett swelled to over 10,000 by 1860 when a railroad was constructed through the community. By 1870, all but one shop had been destroyed by fire. In 1875, an agricultural fair was held at the village which attracted more than $1 million worth of trade. A new cotton gin and mill were built in 1880 and 1890 respectively; these mills continue to be operational today as part of the local economy. In 1903, Kennett became home to both the University of Missouri–Kansas City (UMKC) and Kansas State University (KSU). George Washington Kennett's father had come from Hampshire, England, and settled in what is now North Carolina. In 1836, he and his family moved to what is now Kennett, Missouri. The town grew quickly, and by 1850 it had a population of over 200 people. By 1860, the population had increased to more than 500 people. The town developed a strong economy based on agriculture and cattle production. The town also became known for its pickles and other food products.
