After Ulysses S Grant acquired much of this area for US$20 million (the equivalent of over 2 billion yen today) in 1854 during the Mexican-American War, he built a dam across the Missouri River to control flooding and improve farming prospects downstream. This area now forms part of downtownKC After World War I, many industries moved out of western Kansas City because there were no available markets for their products outside of eastern Missouri. However, since then some major companies have come back including IBM (2005), Raytheon (2006), Monsanto (2007), Schlumberger (2008) and PayPal Holdings Incorporated (2011).
