Kansas City, Missouri is a city in the U.S. state of Missouri. The population was 2,787 at the 2010 census and 3,098 as of 2018. It is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area and is included in the Kansas City-St Joseph-Leavenworth Combined Statistical Area. The city was founded on August 16, 1853 by George Armstrong Custer and his group of officers from Fort Leavenworth, Kansas during their campaign against the Sioux Indians. The site that would become Kansas City was selected for its strategic location as it lay between two major rivers—the Platte River to the east and the Arkansas River to the west—and had access to both water supplies and railroads. When America's first post office opened in Topeka on May 23, 1855, residents named their new town "Kansas City" because they were not allowed to use Omaha or Wichita as their post office addresses due to an ordinance passed by Congress in 1854 barring American settlements within 300 miles (500 km) of Mexico City. In 1860, when American Civil War began Texas annexation led by Sam Houston created a second Indian War which moved eastern Missouri up into federal territory; this also affected Kansas City proper including land acquired by Leland Stanford through Purchase from Osage Nation leaders in 1856. On December 20th 1861 local militia under General James Wofford raided a wagon train carrying goods headed for Confederate forces at Lawrence County Ford near present day Overland Park before completing their journey south side of creek that forms downtown KC today There were no injuries or fatalities but all horses were seized and brought back to Topeka where they were auctioned off with proceeds going towards war expenses for US troops engaged in Mexico

In 1907, Kansas City became an incorporated city and adopted a municipal government. The first African American resident of Kansas City was Harriet Tubman, who arrived in 1865 from Maryland. In 1951, the city hosted the Miss Universe pageant and since then it has been home to many international events including the World Cup and Olympics.
