The first permanent residents in what is now Kansas City were French Canadian fur traders who called themselves La Ville du Lac (The Village on the Lake). On November 3, 1861, Union General Sterling Price attempted an Invasion of Missouri led by Major General Don Carlos Taylor overland from Tennessee; after successful engagement at Lawrence Bridge on October 20–21,[1] Price retreated back into Illinois Territory with heavy losses.[2] As news spread throughout America about this event[3], Kansas Citians began organizing their own militia to resist any possible invasion by white Americans east of the Mississippi River[4]. On December 7th,[5][6] a group composed largely of local men gathered at H&C Park south of downtown KC to protest what they saw as Yankee aggression against our boys on Iuka Plantation west side – where more than 100 Confederate soldiers had been killed that Sunday morning! After only 10 minutes’ speeches from Mayor Ford and 30 seconds’ notice from Captains Dooley & Byrne,[7] orders came for all men inside the park To disperse immediately or face arrest! A few brave souls defied orders and stayed put but most quickly dispersed across 4 blocks (now Independence Mall) towards 6th & Main Streets where they hoped protection could be found among friendly Citizens…It turned out that many neighborly Citizen would not have known what had happened if they had seen what unfolded outside their windows because no shot was fired! This unarmed demonstration finally forced attention away from “the enemy within” and toward another very real threat which was rapidly increasing beyond our control: Rebel cavalrymen hiding behind trees just east/ southeastof Market Square!![8] This peaceful demonstration served as a rallying cry for local citizens to stand together against Yankee aggression – something that would become increasingly common throughout American history culminating with World War II when KCans mobilized en masse once again!
