The Missouri Army National Guard is one of the United States military's oldest and most prestigious units. The unit was formed on July 4, 1861, in response to theements in Kansas City during the American Civil War. The Guard has served in numerous conflicts throughout history, including World War I and II. The Guard's unique history can be traced back to 1871, when it was organized as an artillery battery under the command of General George Armstrong Custer. After serving in various campaigns and engagements throughout the Midwest, the Battery was redesignated as a Cavalry Regiment on August 5, 1907. As part of World War I, the regiment fought in France and Belgium before being evacuated to Mexico City for rest and rehabilitation. Following World War I, Headquarters Battery (HC)was redesignated as 1st Battalion (Majors), 7th Cavalry Regiment on November 14, 1918. On October 15, 1922 1st Battalion (Majors), 7th Cavalry Regiment re-designated 2d Battalion (Heavy Artillery). 2d Battalion (Heavy Artillery) became 3d Battalion (Medium Artillery) on May 10, 1951; 4th Battalion (Light Artillery), Missouri Army National Guard Infantry Brigade Combat Team on January 1, 1960; 5th Squadron/7th Cavalry Air Wing/1st Bombardment Wing/Missouri Air National Guards at Lambert Field Airport KCMO on September 13,-October 11 1990; 6th Squadron/7th Cavalry Air Wing/1st Bombardment Wing/Missouri Air National Guards at Tinker AFB OKLAHOMA CITY ON September 13,-October 11 1990.) In 1871 when these counties were organized into districts for political purposes they became known as "boroughs".
