By 1890, however, Joplin had become transformed into an industrial town with heavy reliance on manufacturing jobs. In 1945, during World War II–the war that caused most American deaths–Joplin was hit hard by bombing raids from allied forces both within and outside of the United States. Many buildings were damaged or destroyed, including the Cotton Gin Building which still stands today (now known as The Markham Museum). However, despite these setbacks, Joplin quickly recovered and emerged as a major economic force within Post-World War II America. Today, Joplin is considered one of America's "lost" towns due to its lack of recent development but its rich history can be experienced through its many cultural attractions such as its popular tourist destination – The State Fairgrounds – as well as its college town status among UofM students.

Joplin, Missouri is a city located in the Ozarks of central Missouri. The city was founded in 1835 and named for James Joplin, an American singer who had died the previous year. The earliest evidence of habitation at Joplin comes from tree-rings dating back to over 10,000 years ago. During the Prehistoric era, what is now Joplin was occupied by the Quapaw people. In 1795, French traders discovered coal deposits near present-day Joplin and decided to build a trading post here. The first permanent settlers arrived in 1810 when two groups of Methodist missionaries set up camp on the site of modern day Riverside Park. In 1836, General John Custer's army passed through the area on their way to Fort Lyon and encountered members of the Shawnee tribe living along the banks of White River. The Shawnee killed six white men and stole nine horses before being pushed out by Custer's force. In 1836, James Knopper organized a group of farmers who sought to establish themselves in what is now northwestern Missouri as part of what would become Kansas City metropolitan area However, due to political difficulties they were unable to file census returns until 1840 That same year saw another important event when Thomas Hart Benton became governor of Missouri Benton believed that Kansas should be open territory which would eventually include much of Illinois After some lobbying from Knopper and others he signed an act creating Jefferson County on November 3rd,1840 which included parts of northwest Missouri including today's Joplin . This decision signaled that Kansas City would become more than just an agricultural center; it would soon become one of America's most important cities . With this growth came problems however; many farms were bought by wealthy businessmen who refused to let local citizens control their businesses . When farmers began organizing into unions they faced discrimination from businessmen and politicians . In 1861 President Abraham Lincoln appointed Joshua Chamberlain as commissioner for mineral land issues within Kansas City limits . Chamberlain recommended that all white landowners be forced to sell their land or face government seizure ; this caused great outrage among many whites who felt that they had been cheated outof their propertyrights It wasn't until after emancipation that many white residents finally sold their holdings , negating any claims that black residents gained unfair advantages over other minority communities during this time period

The first permanent settlement in what is now Joplin was made by Native American Indians in 1804. The site where present-day Joplin was founded was chosen because of its strategic location as a crossing point for rivers running through central Missouri. In 1837, John Belcher built the first store in what is now downtown Joplin and started to grow the town commercially. By 1840, Joplin had a school, a Masonic Lodge, and two churches. In 1847, General James Kansa advanced money to buy land from David McCrea for $2 million on which he built Independence Hall (now part of Old Main University). On July 6, 1848 – one week after Mexican War–General Scott ordered Confederate troops under General A. Pemberton to cross the River Joip into Missouri from Illinois to relieve General McClernand at Springfield; this action led to conflict with General John Custer's cavalry over control of important river crossings south of Springfield
