A railroad arrived in 1871 and spawned another industry: music education at nearby Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC) which gave Joplin its nickname "The Jewel of SIUC". In 1915, construction began on Joplin's famous Gateway Arch which remains one of America's most iconic landmarks today. As World War I drew near, Joplinians banded together to support their military brethren in Europe; many men served in combat and some even received medals for their service. After the war ended, Joplin grew rapidly as new industries arrived and jobs opened up; however, by 1920 it had lost much of its manufacturing base to moving production to abroad. The city's decline continued into the 21st century with steady declines in population and economic activity until 2007 when it reached its current size
