Jennings, MO is a small town in the Ozarks of Missouri. The population was 2,857 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jennings County seat and the Jennings micropolitan area. The first settler in Jennings was Hemanus Jennings, who arrived in 1820. He built a cabin on a creek near what is now Jenningsville. A post office was founded here in 1825, and by 1830, Jennings had a store and two blacksmith shops. A school was also established here in 1830-31. By 1840, there were four stores and ninety-eight residents living in Jennings Township. In 1848, John Fenton purchased land from Nicholas Pryor for $600. Fenton organized the township into six wards (the same number as present day Johnson County). Here he erected a school house and built another store on his farm known as "Fenton's Store." In 1850-51, James Kapp sold him 1/4 mile of land extending along Highways 4 and 3 to form what is now Mound City Road. The town site was platted on this plat and named Kapptown after James Kappfounder of Potosi City (Kansas). On July 1, 1861*, Jennings became an independent municipality under state law when it seceded from Missouri to become Kansas Territory*. Jennings experienced some significant development between 1861* and 1865*. For example, on October 16th*, Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest attacked Union troops at Prentissville while they were marching south to meet General Ulysses S Grant at Wilson's Ford *. This battlemarked the end of the Civil War in America *and* marked the beginning of Reconstruction Era *. It should be noted that not all aspects of this period were good for Jenkinsstown*. Many African Americans fled or were forced out during this time due to racism*. Some businesses closed their doors because people could not find work.. However, manyJenkinsians tried to make do with little or no change until well into the 1930s*. Jenkinsstown lost its status as an agricultural center following these events but regained it by 1970s when more jobs opened up outside of Kansas *. Today Jenkinsstown is home to several retail businesses as well as several schools including Strayer High School* which has been named after local founder Drudy Strayer..

In 1857, the town became an electoral vote for the Kansas–Nebraska Act, which repealed the Missouri Compromise and created Nebraska. Jennings declined to become part of Nebraska and remained an integral part of Kansas until it was admitted into the Union in 1912.
