Jennings, Missouri is a town in Dent County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,697 at the 2010 census. Jennings is part of the Springfield, MO Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was named for General James H. Jennings who fought in the Mexican-American War and later served as governor of Missouri. A post office has been in Jennings since 1879. Jennings was founded by residents of nearby Linnville and Fenton on November 3, 1853 when the Ohio Railroad built a line from St Louis to Jennings through present-day Dent County. The first store opened in what is now Jennings on July 6, 1854. In 1865 local citizens donated land to build a schoolhouse and courthouse which were completed in 1867. In 1870 an addition to the town square was built for churches and other public buildings including a jail and health department; this building still stands today as part of downtown Jenkinsons core business district). By 1880 there were over 100 residents living in Jenkinsons with businesses that included three lumberyards (the last until 1906), two flour mills (1889 & 1899), one wagon factory (1900), five gristmills (1903–1906) and three saddlers shops (1899 & 1903). The early days of radio broadcasting occurred here with the first broadcast from Jenkinson's home station KJZN beginning on October 2nd 1923. In 1933 Pee Wee Reese became its first celebrity guest during his visit to Kansas City before traveling downriver to Greenbay Michigan where he performed at Little Rock American Legion Hall where he won Best Actor prize! On October 16th 1935 WSM Radio began broadcasting from Jenkinson becoming America's First FM Station! From 1934-1978 it aired an advertising sponsored program called "The jingles". Jennings, Mo., is located in the Ozark Mountains and has been inhabited by Native Americans for over two centuries. The area was first settled by Scots-Irish immigrants in the early 1800s. In 1825, Jennings was founded as a trading post on the Arkansas River. The town gradually grew until it reached its current size in 1865 when it became part of Indian Territory. Jennings experienced significant growth during World War II due to its location on the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad. The town's prosperity declined after the war and slowly declined thereafter until it completely disappeared from maps in the late1990s. Today, Jennings is a ghost town that only boasts a few remains of its once thriving community. The history of Jennings begins with settlers who arrived in 1825. These new arrivals were primarily Presbyterians, most of whom came from Scotlandx Ireland because land prices there were much higher than anywhere else in America at that time. The area around Jennings had been occupied by Native Americans for years, and many of these people knew about and used the river as an important transportation artery. In 1824, Scottish-Irish immigrants named John Drummond and Archibald Butt built a cabin near present day Jennings on what is now known as Drummond Hill Road. This cabin would become one of the most important centers of trade within the small settlement that grew up around it: traders came here to purchase goods such as tobacco, flour, cheese, eggs and cattle from local farmers while also exporting goods back to their home countries. By 1850, Jennings had grown to include some 300 residents; however, this number would only reach 1200 by 1870 because OFA regulations made it illegal for frontier towns to grow larger than 12 hundred inhabitants without government approval! During Reconstruction (1865-1877), arriving blacks hoped to find opportunity and education in Jenkinsons white majority environment; however this hope quickly turned sour when black men began working alongside whites on equal terms but earning less money than they did before emancipation! Many African American men decided not to return home following Reconstruction – instead they found work opportunities far away from their homes or turned themselves into criminals operating out of nearby cities like Topeka or Wichita Falls (Kan.). As black Jenkinsonians left for greener pastures elsewhere throughout Kansas and Oklahoma Territory during this time period (euphemistically called “the Great Migration”), so too did many whiteJenkinsonians follow suit – leaving behind little evidence remaining today of what once constituted one of Missouri’s most vibrant communities
