Jennings, Missouri is a small town in St. Louis County, Missouri, United States. The population was 7,711 at the 2010 census. Jennings is located on State Route 6 south of St. Peters and north of Ferguson. It is part of the Springfield–Branson Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in Jennings were James and Martha Jennings who arrived in 1817 from Kentucky and settled on a farm near present-day Jenningsville. In 1825 the couple moved to what is now${}the{}township{\}:$ was platted as a town by commissioners James Waddell and Ebenezer Lewis on May 25, 1830. The name was chosen for its isolation from other settlements in the area – it means "Island" or "Island in a River". The first store opened in the community on December 1, 1830; this was built by Jno Fenton to sell goods generated by his farmsteads within three miles of Jenningsville NULL miles (6 km) away: "Fenton's Store" still stands today as one of the most notable landmarks in Jenningsville. The settlement rapidly grew due to its location, accessibility to transportation (by steamboat), and good schools which attracted migrants from parts of Illinois and Indiana en masse during the 1830s: many people traveled via boat downriver to access farmland around Jenningsville while others walked overland

Jennings was one of the earliest towns in Jennings County, Missouri. It was founded in 1836 by a group of individuals who were looking for a new home after moving from O'Fallon, Illinois. The town originally consisted of just a few homes and a store. However, over time, Jennings grew into a large community with several businesses and homes. In 1957, Jennings became the capital of Jennings County. Jennings is located in central Missouri on the east bank of the Kishwaukee River. The town was named after General James A. Jennings, who served as governor of Missouri from 1837 to 1840 and again from1845 to 1849. The original town site was close to where present-day Jennings is located and included parts of what are now East Stroudsburg Township and West Union Township. The first settlers in Jennings were farmers who arrived around 1836 when land prices were high in central Illinois following the American Civil War. After some initial difficulties getting through the early stages of development, the town began growing rapidly due to its location and natural resources such as timberland and coal mines that could be tapped quickly given their proximity to other settlements incentral Missouri including Jefferson City and Independence. 1 By 1850, there were over 100 residents living in Jennings with about 30 businesses operating out of about 20 small shops/houses thatched roofs back then! Jennings had two schools when it first opened: one for children age 7 – 11 years old operated by philanthropist Captain George Sibley; and an adult school operated by Danish immigrants William Pedersen (a Quaker) and his wife Johanna Augusta Pohl (a Lutheran). both schools closed within 3 years due to population growth (and lack of finances) which led to increased competition among citizens for limited education opportunities available at that time! In addition, several churches also functioned during this period including Our Lady Of Loretto Catholic Church which held services weekly until 1861 when it moved outwards into what is now Maplewood; German Baptist Church which met on alternate weeks until 1860; Swedish Lutheran Church which met every Sunday until 1865; First Methodist Episcopal Church - open 6 days per week starting on November 1st 1830 - which continued services even though their church building burned down in 1870; Presbyterianism started coming into play around 1840 with members meeting at various stores before finally settling at what is now called Old Dutchman’s Store where they organized their own congregation in 1848!! After becoming part of Kansas Territory following Kansas admission into the United States on April 14thernew personnel relocated from O’Fallon across state lines beginning November 15th 1850 under command Major General Wm Henson USMILINETO serve as Commanding Officer commanding all troops camps west or south side OF MISSOURI IN DIVISION OF THE MISSOURI STATE GUARD established October 9th 1851
Jennings was founded by James Jennings in 1827. It became a town in 1868 and was named for General Andrew Jackson. The first post office was established in Jennings in 1870.
