Jennings, Missouri is a small town in the Ozarks of southern Missouri. The population was 3,120 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield-Springfield-Jefferson Micropolitan Statistical Area. Jennings was first settled in 1855 by George Jennings and his wife Eliza and their children, who named it Jennings after themselves. Jennings became a township in 1872, and was incorporated as a city in 1907. The city's history can be traced back to 1855 when George Jennings founded Jennings Station on the eastern outskirts of Springfield. He named his new community after himself, but it did not take long for other settlers to arrive and rename the community too. In 1870, John Fenton renamed Jennings Station after his home state of Missouri while living nearby in Jefferson City; this naming also reflected Fenton's deep interest in local politics and economy within the community. In 1907, when Springfield annexed Jennings as its own municipality, Mayor James Lanyon made sure that all aspects of city life would be integrated into one entity - including its police department which had been separate since before Springfield annexation occurred. Jennings, Missouri is located in the Ozarks of central Missouri and is part of the Springfield metropolitan area. The town was originally called Jenningsville, but it changed its name to Jennings in 1839 after General Andrew Jackson's victory over Native American forces at the Battle of Little Big Horn. The town became a post office in 1853 and an agricultural center during the late 19th century. In 1925, Jennings was named one of five towns in West Plains Township to be annexed into nearby Jefferson City. The annexation created a new city government that continues to operate today. The history of Jennings can be traced back to when Adam Clayton Powell Jr., an African American congressman from New York City and future U.S. Secretary of State, served as mayor from 1906-1912 and 1914-1920. He is also credited with popularizing the term "all white" for describing segregated neighborhoods in America, which helped trigger public demand for desegregation across many cities throughout the South during this period. After leaving Congress, Powell resumed his role as mayor in 1935 and continued until his death in 1943. During his time as Mayor, Jenkinsons contributed significantly to rebuilding local infrastructure following World War II including the construction of a downtown skyscraper and a new high school (now known as Norris High School). In 1965, Jenkinson spearheaded efforts within Springfield to become host city for the 1968 Summer Olympics when he convinced then Governor Bruce Ritchie to approve $27 million towards that goal - one of only two municipalities statewide to receive such support at that time.
