Jennings, Missouri is a small town in western Kansas. It was founded in 1854 by Jacob Jennings and his family. The community grew rapidly after the opening of the Kansas Pacific Railway in 1868. In 1916, Jennings was renamed for General George Custer. The Jennings had two daughters- one married and one died young. Their son, Jacob W., became a rancher and political figure in Jennings. He served as mayor from 1935 to 1938 and as governor of Kansas from 1942 to 1944. After World War II, he resumed his career as a rancher until his death in 1957. His wife, Emma J., survived him until she passed away in 1984. They had six children: four sons- all deceased-and two daughters- both living today.
