Jennings was founded by farmers from Lebanon and Jackson counties in 1836 as a post office on what is now State Route 362. The first settler, Wm Troup, arrived on July 24, 1836. By 1840, there were 11 settlers living in Jennings proper; six men and five women. A store with three barrels of oil per day opened in 1840 and became an important factor in thetown's development; it remains open to this day as a grocery store/restaurant called "The Old Post Office." In 1848, Jennings added a schoolhouse to its facilities; that building still stands today as part of Jenkins Elementary School District #1's history program museum collection. In 1850 the community built its own jail; that building still stands today as part of Jennings Municipal Court Annexes #1-3B along State Route 362 north thereof.) Jennings was founded in 1836 by John Jennings and his wife, Polly. The town was named for Jennings' ancestor, Benjamin Jennings. The first settler in the township was James Sibley. In 1842, the townsite was platted under the name of "Jenningsville." In 1851, it changed its name to "Jenningsville Township." On July 6, 1870, the township was organized into a new district of Benton County. It remained part of that county until January 3, 1907 when it became a part of St. Louis County.
