Jennings, Missouri is a small town in Howard County, Missouri. The population was 2,637 at the 2010 census. Jennings was named for J. H. Jennings who founded the town in 1836. Jennings lies on a bend in the Missouri River and its name is derived from this geographical feature. According to the2010 US Census, Jennings has a total area of 0.9 square miles (2 km²). The first settlers in Jennings were farmers who arrived in 1836 from Kentucky and Virginia. The land that now comprises Jennings was bought by John Hynes from Daniel Boone for $1,000 cash and ten slaves. The first post office opened in 1839 and was called Fentonville after Fenton Township, Ohio which then had a population of 5,000 people. In 1847, Andrew Wylie donated land to build an academy which would become known as Central High School today. The town plat was filed with the county recorder on December 12th of that year and it became effective on January 1st of 1850 when it incorporated under the name of Jennings village with boundaries that stretched west to Russellsboro and east to Lexingtonville In 1870, Jno Crain donated land east of downtown to become what is now known as Community College District No 4 In 1907 Drury Gentry donated land south of town to form what is now known as Memorial Hospital District No 3 In 1920 Harry Kapp donated an acre (0.50 km²) north of town to become what is now known as First Baptist Church . In 1925 William Largent gifts lands extending into both directions between Third Street and Main Street forming what are today Norris Road/Jennings Boulevard boundary On November 7th 1929 James Eads donation totaling 8 acres (3 ha) added much needed open space around historic downtown core On July 16th 1935 Bennie Beattie gifted another 2 acres (1 km²) northeast corner lot across Third Street from First Baptist Church . This parcel became home to Presentation Elementary School Today

Jennings was an important center of commerce in Missouri during the early 20th century, and its citizens were influential figures in state politics. In 1916, Jennings voters passed a referendum approving annexation into St. Louis County, making Jennings the first town in Missouri to become part of a county. The town continued to grow through the years, and by 1990 it had reached its current size. In 2000, Jennings was named one of "America's Most Creative Cities" by Forbes magazine.
