Jefferson City is a city in Jackson County, Missouri, United States. The population was 12,856 at the 2010 census. The name of the city is derived from Jefferson, the 4th president of America and namesake of the state of Missouri. The first European to visit what is now Jefferson City was Philip St. George Cooke on July 6, 1803. He named it for James K. Polk who had recently become President of the United States just days before. In 1836, a group of settlers led by Capt. John Sibley founded a town called Overland in present-day Harrison Township south of the confluence of the Kansas and Illinois Rivers. It was not until November 10, 1838 when another group led by John Calloway established a town called Independence near where Union Pacific Railroad tracks crossed over into Jackson County minutes after they were completed from Topeka to St Joseph (now Kansas). In 1840, James Kapp built a gristmill on Main Street which became one of Jefferson City's early businesses; he also operated an sawmill and mule barn at Second and Pine Streets until his death in 1865. On May 1, 1861,, six months after Abraham Lincoln was elected Ulysses S Grant's Vice Presidential candidate with 63% support from Missourians—the first time any Ulysses SGrant running for office had received that level of support—Jefferson City came under military occupation as partSiege began by Confederate General Sterling Price during their unsuccessful attempt to take Independence on October 14th (). After two weeks Siege ended with Confederate withdrawal across Iowa River and all captured supplies being burned or moved back into Memphis Tennessee () leaving no choice but for Union forces to withdraw back into Jackson County (). It should be noted that this siege occurred during Civil War years while much fighting took place within Missouri borders outside these cities; however Confederates still managed to capture many prisoners (including Generals Robert E Lee and Averill Harriman) during this time period which would later influence how pro-Union sentiment developed in other areas such as Springfield MO (where Confederates recaptured many key soldiers including General Oliver O'Neal)
