Jackson, Missouri is a town in St. Louis County, Missouri, United States. The population was 7,924 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield-Jefferson City Metropolitan Statistical Area. Jackson was founded in 1831 by fur traders and Mormons who named it after James K. Polk, then president of the United States. In 1848, it became the county seat of St. Louis County and remains so today although its population has grown to over 11,000 since then. The history of Jackson can be traced back to 1831 when fur traders and Mormons took up residence in what is now called Jackson Township on the banks of the Missouri River north of downtown St. Louis. The name "Jackson" was given to them by James K Polk as a reward for their successful efforts during the Mexican–American War (1846-48). One account suggests that they were specifically looking for a site that would allow them to build a road from Independence Hills (southwest of present day Saint Joseph) downriver to Yoknapatawpha Bluffs (northwest of modern day Kansas City), which would give them an advantage over other wagon trains heading westward across the Great Plains during this period before railroads arrived on both sides of the river! In 1848, when St. Louis County was organized, Jackson became its county seat and remained so until 1925 when it switched places with Jefferson City due to growing population pressure within that city boundaries only two years after its founding! Jackson, Missouri is a town in St. Francois County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,279 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area. The first settler in Jackson was Jotham Cranch on July 3, 1812. The original name of the town was "Fayetteville." A post office called Fayetteville was established in 1827, and remained in operation until 1861. The first store in Jackson was built by Wm. Silliman and Andrew Holmes on Main Street in 1830. In 1850, General James K. Polk arrived at Fort Donelson to lead Union troops against Confederate General Robert Ewing's army there that year. He stopped at Fayetteville for dinner with Governor John Pemberton before continuing his march westward across the state line into Arkansas Territory to join General Ulysses S. Grant's campaign against Confederate forces there that fall. Ewing had hoped to bring pressure on Grant so he would withdrawal from the war; however, Polk stayed and fought an indecisive battle against him at Pea Ridge outsideaya on April 6 instead which led to Grant taking initiative and turning back south into Arkansas Territory as well as Block Island Ferry (present-day Independence) becoming a key strategic point for Union forces operations during this campaign
Jackson, Missouri was founded in 1836 as a small town on the banks of the Missouri River. The town quickly became a manufacturing center for cloth and other products. In 1861, Jackson was named the capital of the Confederate States of America after it seceded from the United States. The city continued to grow during the war, and by 1865 it had reached its current size. After the war, Jackson began to decline as a manufacturing center and lost its prominence within the Confederacy. However, it continued to be an important local community until its destruction in World War II.
