Independence, Missouri is a town in St. Francois County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was laid out in 1839 by Captain Elijah Smith and named after his home state of New York. Independence was incorporated as a village in 1853, and became a town in 1907. A post office called Independence was established in 1838, and remained open until it was discontinued in 1903. A store called Smith's Store served as the first store on the present site of Independence from 1839 to 1850. The first school in Independence was built on what is now Main Street near where First National Bank now stands in 1861. A Methodist church also stood on this site from 1861 to 1870; it burned down two years later but been rebuilt and renamed Mount Carmel Methodist Church before being destroyed by fire again in 1886. In 1893, voters approved incorporation of the town into an independent city with its own mayor and council; however, this measure failed to pass when annexed to Springfield four years later due to strong opposition from the community's majority Republican establishment
