Independence, Missouri is a city on the Mississippi River in theMidwestern United States. It was founded in 1820 and has been the county seat of Sedgwick County since 1836. The population was 23,523 as of the 2010 census. The town was named after James K. Polk, who as president Ulysses S. Grant signed the Kansas–Nebraska Act into law on March 24,1861, which repealed Kansas' slavery laws and allowed Nebraska to become part of the Union. After years of debate over whether or not to secede from Missouri, residents voted in favor of secession on November 4, 1861. On February 14th 1862 Confederate General Robert Ewell crossed the state line into Missouri and attacked Union forces at Rolla before retreating back across the river to Illinois. In response Union General Douglas MacArthur moved his army northeastward towards Rolla while Confederate General John Hunt decided to withdraw from the region entirely and Offensive Clark pushed eastward across Missouri towards Hannibal before finally withdrawing his army north-west of Springfield October 10th 1863 just weeks before Battle of Corinth (November 11th 1863). On January 6th 1865 a groupof men led by Captain Phil Kearny traveled from Council Bluffs Iowa to Independence where they surrendered all their weapons including cannons and horses to local militiamen under Colonel George Armstrong Custer
