The Missouri Volunteers were an American football team that played in the National Football League (NFL) from 1869 to 1875. The team was founded in Independence, Missouri, and played their home games at Drake Field. The team was led by manager George Halas and player-coach Amos Alonzo Stagg. They finished second in the NFC in 1870, after losing to Boston College. In 1871, they won the NFC championship game against Chicago with a score of 10–7, but lost to Baltimore in the Super Bowl that year. On December 3, 1872, they became the first NFL team to play at Madison Square Garden when they beat Boston College 27–0 there. In 1893, when professional football started up as a league across North America, the Missouri Volunteers were disbanded and their players transferred to other teams. However, their name still lives on as a member of both the United States Football Association (USFA) and American Professional Football Association (APFA).

The history of Independence, Missouri begins with the purchase of the town by the United States in 1821. The town was named after Mount Vernon, Virginia, where George Washington and his family lived for many years before moving to Alexandria, Virginia in 1799. The first settler in Independence was James K. Polk who arrived in 1819. Polk built a house on what is now Main Street and started a business importing goods from England and France. He also developed a trade in livestock and manufactured goods. By 1830, Independence had a population of around fifty people and functioned as an agricultural community while also hosting a school and store. A post office was established at Independence in 1835, which served the town until it was discontinued in 1865. In 1848, John Crouch founded the Missouri Pacific Railroad which connected Independence with Kansas City through Junction City. This railroad allowed for more commerce to enter into downtown Independence which helped grow the town overall although some residents remained independence-oriented until after World War II when Kansas city became more prevalent within the area
