Hazelwood is a city in Jackson County, Missouri, United States. The population was 2,711 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Jackson County. Hazelwood was founded by John Brown in 1836 and named for his daughter, Hazel (1796-1881). It became a city on February 14, 1907. The first settlers in what is now Hazelwood were John Brown and his family who arrived in 1836 from Kentucky. They built their log cabin on the banks of the White River near present day Indianola. The cabin served as home to the Browns until they moved to their current location in 1840. In 1847, John Brown married Sarah King and this led to the erection of a large house on Main Street that still stands today as one of the most distinctive buildings in town. In 1854, Abraham Lincoln visited Hazelwood while he was campaigning for president and purchased some land here which he used as part of his farm campaign headquarters at Green Gables Plantation during those years when farming was an important part of Lincoln's political career. After serving two terms as Mayor of Hazelwood from 1901-1903, Hosea Howard became mayor after defeating incumbent Jeptha Sibley with over 60% of the vote in 1903. On November 3rd 1904 Samuel Phelps drowned while trying to cross White River nearpresentdayCretellsville when a floating log bridge gave way; Phelps' body has never been found and no evidence suggests he fell intothe river accidentally or deliberately although it is also possible that foul play played role herein. Hazelwood experienced its heyday during World War I with production totaling over 1000000 barrels per day resulting in $2 million value added to the local economy due to war supplies shipped through our portage route parallel to US Highway 64 located just east of town limits During World War II much activity changed focus towards mass production munitions with Hazelwoods output reaching up to 400000 barrels per day . This period produced many famous residents such as Orson Welles who worked at RCA Laboratories nearby After WWII ended many factories closed down leaving Hazelwood struggling economically but slowlyreturning back into prominence thanks largely to township government support which includes several new businesses being established within town limits including an elementary school (Grace Allen), a library (John Auld), retail stores (Kohl's department store) along with several other small businesses . More recently there has been an increasein gentrification taking place with larger McMansions moving into older sections centralizing business operations away from downtown .Today hazelWOOD continues its resurgence based largely offof agriculture including cattle ranching/grazing operations done primarily outside town Limits providing employment for dozensof people
Hazelwood is a city in and the county seat of Hazelwood County, Missouri, United States. The population was 9,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area. The town was platted in 1839 by John Sibley, who named it for his sister-in-law's home near Chicago. In 1851, Wm. Fenton organized a township and built a courthouse on the site of what is now Hazelwood Elementary School. A post office called "Hazelwood" was established in 1856, and remained in operation until 1907. The first settler in Hazelwood was James Hickey who arrived in 1840 from Kentucky with his family. He landed on the present site of Hazelwood on May 10th that year while exploring what would become this town. By 1850, there were twenty-six residents living in Hazelwood Township. By 1860, there were ninety-eight people living here; however, by 1870 only six people remained within the township boundaries; four of whom lived within one mile (one kilometer) of where today's downtown stands. In 1871 William Pritchard moved to Hazelwood from Independence and began buying land around what is now Peoria Avenue and Park Boulevard which he donated to make way for what would become downtown – then known as "Pritchard Prairie". In 1880 Wm., Molineux & Company erected a large sawmill across the street from what is now First Presbyterian Church which became an important commercial center for this part of town during its early years – although much development didn't take place until after World War II when Interstate Highway 65 cut through this area making it even more stronghold for commerce with many new homes being constructed along I-65 adjacent to downtown before it had completely destroyed everything east of Main Street between Jackson Road/Uptown Parkway / Illinois Central Railway tracks/Stratford Road etc.... In 1906 Reuben Kapp purchased 1/4 acre (0.25 hectare) north side lot adjoining Howells Blockhouse House property inside current day northwest corner Rt 5 south side block directly across Elm Street just west of current day location OFIY building next to Masonic Temple.......Kapp Stable #1 still stands today.........From here Kapp ran J Brigantine Cigar store brick business out front until 1915 when he sold interest to Harry Wehner ......Harry Wehner continued running store until 1921 when he bought same property back from Reuben Kapp......This spot currently occupied by former fire station located at intersection OFIY & Broadway…..It should be noted that other than Elfreda's grocery store several buildings still standing today including: Post Office (1896), Hollis Hotel (1912), Masonic Temple (1915), Bank Of America Building (2000), First Presbyterian Church - Original 21st century structure During prohibition days all businesses closed but J Brigantine continueddoing business as cigar store.....After prohibition ended various changes took place such as: Elm Street becoming Public Square(1920s), multiple stores added(1930s), renovated old post office building into condominium complex(1970s), fire station moved(1980s). In 1999 two vacant lots were taken over by developer Steve Hoffman and Development Services Group renamed Hoffman Estates after him...along with plans for mixed use development including residential units and retail space.......Today most notable building remains OFIY building next door which has been used as an administrative offices since 2006
