Hazelwood is a town in St. Francois County, Missouri, United States. The population was 2,874 at the 2010 census. Hazelwood is part of the Independence, MO Micropolitan Statistical Area. The area that now includes Hazelwood was first settled by Scots-Irish immigrants in the late 18th century. In 1833, a group of Englishmen founded the town of Independence on land purchased from the French Canadians living around Independence Lake. The town name is derived from Indian words meaning "place where trees grow." In 1872, when a railway line was completed through St. Francois County and intersected with the Illinois Central Railroad just north of Village Park, settlers began to arrive in large numbers and small towns quickly sprang up all around it – including Independence and Hazelwood. By 1890, there were over hundred homes in what is now Hazelwood – more than any other community in Missouri during that time period. Today's downtown areas were built beginning in the early 20th century as businesses moved into new buildings designed for trade shows and conventions rather than for residential purposes. One such building still stands: Union Hall which served as Headquarters for many years for the local paper companies (the first post office opened here on July 1st 1868). also located near downtown is Beard's Drug Store which operated from 1907-1968; this store helped start what would become known as downtown development west of Union Hall by creating retail space within walking distance of most residents while preserving theirresidential neighborhoods

Hazelwood, Missouri is a town in St. Francois County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. The community proper lies within the city of Hazelwood and is part of the Hazelwood-St. Francois-Frisco Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in what would become Hazelwood were two families who arrived in 1836 from Illinois. They named their land "Hazel Wood" after a large hazelnut tree they saw growing near their home on Canisteo Creek. In 1840, Joshua Griggs bought the land from John Goudreau for $1,000. He built his first house there in 1841 and opened a general store and grist mill which he ran until his death in 1865. His wife Esther operated the inn at this time until it closed in 1903 due to Prohibition measures passed by Congress during William McKinley's administration as part of the American Civil War effort to enforce Unionism over slavery (in violation of the Thirteenth Amendment). In 1851 Isaac Fenton bought some land adjoining Joshua Griggs' property for $200 and started farming it himself with assistance from his brother Amos Fenton Jr.. He became an important figure in early Hazelwood because he was able to get passage for goods through Indian Territory on his way to Kansas City to sell goods at auction there during the mid-19th century; this helped him build up a large commercial base within what would become known as "the Pioneer Valley." In 1861 Isaac married Jane Addison and moved into her parents' home which served as their farmstead until 1898 when they built their own home on section 4 above present day downtown Hazelwood; this allowed them more independence both politically and economically than had been available before since they were no longer beholden to anyone but themselves. By 1890, Jane Addison had also given birth to four children: Nora (1869–1966), Harry (1871–1945), Charles (1873–1965) and Marionella (1875–1976). In 1907 Augustus Cates bought some additional land adjacent to Nora's family farmstead which he used mostly for grazing purposes while he developed various industries including one cotton ginners company, several breweries including Three Rivers Brewing Company Limited., three blacksmiths shops (), six harness shops (), four saddleshops () along with several other businesses across a variety of trade sectors including real estate development (). After years of struggles culminating with bankruptcy proceedings filed against him by creditors following an 1893 fire that destroyed much of Augustus Cates' business empire, Cyrus Hogg acquired control over all assets of Three Rivers Brewing Company Limited., saved it from insolvency and renamed it Hogg Brewery Incorporated.; Augustus Cates retained ownership only of the production facilities located on section 3rd Street east side of town (. . .) between Crossroads Road northbound/southbound (. . . .) across Frome Avenue westward.) It should be noted that although most aspects associated with "Hazelwood" remain unchanged today - such as its ZIP code - many districts within town have changed hands multiple times since its incorporation into city limits back in 1907; these include sections 2nd Street south/west corner crossroad where current day Pryor Road begins/. During World War II many local citizens took up arms against Japanese invaders or collaborated directly with military forces providing moral support or working openly together under wartime provisionals names such as Combat Infantry Regiment 521st Infantry Division (). Many residents also played significant roles later on during peacetime periodsudiplomacy efforts related thereto or simply helping out whenever possible (); some notable individuals include James Averill who served twice consecutively terms as Mayor beginning July 1st 1946 thru May 9th 1951; Lloyd Bowers who represented district 13 (-3) throughout 1946 through 1952 being elected unopposed each time even though no incumbent existed within that congressional district at that point(); Vernon Wickersham who served two terms consecutively starting January 3rd 1949 through December 31st 1953 despite not having any political experience whatsoever prior thereto;; Florence Kingman who was elected Mayor using secret ballot after husband Jethro Kingman died suddenly November 7th 1945 immediately prior thereto;; Harlan Barnes who won election by running unopposed November 16th 1947 after serving concurrently as member(s)of both houses Of The General Assembly representing District 21 (-2) ever since then.; Richie Coxwell Sr.$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ $$ ; Dick Keyes Sr.$$$$$ $$
Hazelwood was founded in 1837 by John and Rachel Finch. The community took its name from the Hazelnut Tree, which is located in the town center. In 1860, a post office was established in Hazelwood and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. The first school in Hazelwood was built in 1841. It became an elementary school and served grades K-4 until 1957. In 1922, the current high school building was constructed and operated as a junior high school until 1969 when it became an seniors high school. In 1954, Hazelwood organized as a city and has since grown to include 16 blocks of land totaling 314 acres (128 hectares). The city currently has a population of over 20,000 residents who are divided among three police departments: the Police Department, Fire Department, and Public Works Department.
