Hazelwood is a small city in St. Francois County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. Hazelwood is part of the Kansas City Metropolitan Statistical Area. In 1861, the citizens of Hazelwood voted to secede from Missouri led by Governor Andrew Johnson because they objected to his proposed state budget which increased military spending without providing any corresponding financial increase for civilian needs such as education and infrastructure development. On July 16th of that year, Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest attacked Union forces under Ulysses S Grant at Springfield Armory in what would become known as Battle of Springfield Armory (the battle also resulted in three deaths). The attack caused great damage to both armies but no casualties on either side; however this event helped spur increased Union military activity across the state during the Civil War era. After the war ended with slavery abolished in 1865, most residents returned home while a fewestablished themselves elsewhere including nearby Lenexa where they formed a Post Office in 1870 Hazelwood experienced growth following World War II with numerous factories opening up throughout St Francois County due to wartime production shortages within America combined with demand from overseas markets. Today, many of Hazelwood's industries focus on health care services such as nursing homes and mental health treatment facilities; however, some heavy industry still remains in operation such as paper mills and a large aluminum plant that employs over 1,000 people today.

In 1928, Hazelwood voters passed an ordinance authorizing city government with a Mayor and six City Council members instead of five elected at-large like previous years. In 1951, the town annexed portions of Forest Park to form a new city called Forest Park Heights annexed by Hazelwood making it nine towns within one city limits since then!
