Hazelwood is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area and is located just south of Interstate 670 on the edge of the city ofKansas City. The community was founded in 1872 by John A. Hardesty and his wife Sarah Ann (née Green) Hardesty. The name is derived from a tree that grew near their farmhouse; the hardiness of the trees led to its early growth as a farming community. In 1892, John Hardesty donated land for what became Hazelwood Cemetery and in 1908 purchased additional land from J.B.]Ferguson for $1 million dollars making it one of the largest cemetery donation ever made in America at that time. In 1916, he donated an addition to Hazelwood Cemetery which now houses both his family's remains as well as those of many other notable Americans including Robert Hutton and James Buchanan Forbes Jr..
