On November 11, 1861, the Missouri National Guard was organized. The Guard was originally to be a military force composed of white men from the eastern border of Missouri. However, soon after its establishment, Missouri's slaveholding population grew so rapidly that it became necessary for the Guard to include black men in order to protect them from violence and possible enslavement. The first black man to serve in the Grandview National Guard was Major John Hutton on December 4, 1861. Hutton had previously served as a sergeant with Company K in St. Louis County and later enlisted with Company G at Rolla before being called up for duty in November 1861. He arrived in Springfield on December 2nd and was immediately put into action helping garrison the city while also providing support to General David Logan during his Raid on Jefferson City on December 3rd. It wasn't until 1862 that African Americans were finally allowed full membership within the Grandview National Guard and they began serving as soldiers under command of white officers. A railroad depot was built at Grandview by the Central Pacific Railroad in 1893; it became an industrial center with manufacturing such as tire manufacture, children's clothing production, paper making and soap making among its products until it closed down in 2002 due to bankruptcy proceedings. A gristmill was built in 1847 and a cider mill in 1850. The first store opened in 1861. From 1865 to 1870, Grandview had two banks: the First National Bank of Grandview and the Second National Bank of Independence. In 1870, a sawmill and gristmill were erected on the north side of town. A post office called "Grand View" was established at Grand View on February 17, 1862; however it never gained any popularity and ceased operation after one year.
