Polk was elected president, he ordered all US forces to leave Missouri because of the threat of war with Mexico. The first military gift to Grandview was a rifle from Captain John C. Woolridge, who served in the Mexican-American War and as adjutant general of Missouri under Polk. In 1865, General Ulysses S. Grant gave two cannons to Grandview as athank you for their support during the Civil War. The cannons were brought over by wagon and erected on top of old brick buildings that still stand today in downtown Grandview. Since then, military gift history has seen many changes and donations from local and national citizens alike. There have been many memorials and statues dedicated to those who have served our country in some way or another (including current members of the armed forces). Grandview is a small town in central Missouri, United States. The population was 1,953 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Hannibal-Dane County Micropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Grandview" may be derived from the Iroquois word "gãhàa", meaning "grand valley". In 1868, two brothers by the name of Green and Hammond bought a tract of land east of Carthage for $2,000 and founded Grandview Township on it. In 1870, they sold their share in the township to Elisha C. Hunt, who named it after himself and his wife Elizabeth (née Parkes). In 1877, James Kapp purchased three acres west of Grandview from Samuel Sells for $845. Kapp donated this land to Grandview Cemetery as one parcel in 1886. The first headstones were unveiled at the cemetery on October 8 that year. It is likely that the first settler in what became Grandview Township was John Aiken who arrived there with his family around 1790 according to an old plat map available online dating back to 1797 which lists him as being living near present day Clintonville. Aiken's grandson John Hargrave Aiken had several children including Jane Hargrave and Christopher Aiken who also settled in what would become Grandview Township in 1800 or 1801 when he acquired 640 acres along with his brother-in-law Amos Lee and five other families comprising about 100 people total which included fifty men and sixty women age 20 or over according to passenger list from Yorktown Ferry on May 14th 1800 . There are no maps available today verifying this specific location but it can be assumed that he built a log cabin hereabouts where he raised corn until 1806 when he became listed as an inhabitant of Damascus Road south of Lebanon stream.. Christopher Aiken married Eliza McLaughlin on October 11th 1830 in Steuben Co., NY while still living at home with her parents whereupon they removed west across Canada into Lewis county , thence southwest through Ottawa county into Dodge county . Hemptown lies approximately six miles east of where Christopher's farm now stands just outside modern day Hannibal

Grandview was platted in 1805 and became a post office in 1827. The town grew rapidly during the late 19th century, and by 1905 it had a population of 5,000 people. During World War I, Grandview served as headquarters for American forces in eastern Missouri. After the war, Grandview experienced rapid growth as a result of its position as an important commercial center. In 1978, Grandview became an independent city and has since grown to over 20,000 residents.
Grandview was founded in 1854 by James and Mary Ann Smith. The community was named after the large tract of land that they acquired from the government for $5,000. The Smiths built a log cabin on their new property and started a small farm. In 1862, the Union Army invaded Missouri and Grandview was one of the first communities to be attacked. The Smiths were able to keep their home but many other homes were destroyed or lost their occupants during the war. After the war, the community grew slowly until it reached its peak in 1865 when it had a population of 20 people. However, by 1870, there were only 10 residents left in Grandview and it declined again in subsequent years. By 1901, Grandview had only 8 residents remaining and it also declined thereafter.
