Grandview, Missouri is a small town in the Ozarks of north-central Missouri. The population was 1,628 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield, MO Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community began as a post office called Hazel Springs on October 25, 1881. The name changed to Grandview on September 24, 1886. It was laid out by George WASHINGTON and village trustees James BECK and John GREEN in 1887. Grandview was named after General Andrew Jackson's home state of Tennessee. The first store in town opened in 1889 and operated until 1906. In 1907 Grandview incorporated as a township under the name of "Montgomery" because it had been chosen as the site for the new courthouse that year. In 1924 local resident Harry ALLEN donated land for a high school which became Grades 9-12 Monterey Park High School; this school served Grades K-8 until grand opening in 1957 when Grades 7-12 moved to nearby Florissant High School (now Florissant Middle School). According to the 2010 census, there were 1,628 people living in Grandview Township: 524 households (or 63% of all dwellings), 128 families (or 15% of all households), and 362 individuals (or 20% of all residents). The racial makeup of Grandview Township was 97% white and 3% black or African American according to Census data; other races made up 2%. Grandview, Missouri was a town in Greene County, Missouri, United States. The population was 927 at the 2000 census. It is located on the east bank of the Kansas River. The first settlers in what would become Grandview were three families from Illinois who arrived in 1836. They set up a stockade around what is now their old home and named it after their home state of Illinois. The first store in town was opened by John Harkins in 1838. In 1840, Grangersville was established as a post office about southeast of Grandview and served until 1852 when it became part of Springfield. In 1854, the community acquired its present name when Daniel Boone purchased land north of Grandview and laid out the townsite that same year with help from his brother James Boone III. He named it for General George Washington Carleton (1775-1845), one of his personal friends and namesake for many local landmarks including Fort Boone on the edge of Springfield's city limits which still stands to this day. During Reconstruction era years (1865-1877), Grandview saw heavy fighting between Union forces and Confederate sympathizers during the American Civil War; most notably occurring during April 1865 Battle of Corinth where Union troops under command Major General Ulysses S Grant successfully repelled an attack by Confederate forces commanded by Lieutenant General Ayer Lincoln ancestry Senator Abraham Lincoln also fought at Corinth along side Grant
The first permanent settler in the area was James M. Kirkland, who arrived in1841. By 1845, there were ten families living on the farmstead known as Grandview. In 1848, Grady and Eliza Orr purchased land from the Kirklands, and began to grow crops and raise livestock. In 1853, they built a log cabin on their property which still stands today. The Orrs donated the land for a public school in 1865. The school district was founded in 1870 and named after Mrs. Eliza Orr’s daughter-in-law (Mrs. Lavinia Clements). The first superintendent of schools for Grandview School District was Mrs. Ida Bickham Brownell in 1916/17.
