Grain Valley, Missouri is a small town in the Ozarks of northcentral Missouri. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in Grain Valley were the Hennepin tribe of Native Americans who roamed this area for centuries before Contact between Europeans and Native Americans ended around 1763. The first white settlers arrived in 1824 when Peter Gregg, an American fur trader, settled near present day Grain Valley on the east side of US Route 60. He named his new community after himself, Grain Valley on account of all the wheat he had traded from Canada. In 1827, James Wirt sold 160 acres (60 ha) of land grant called "Olive Branch" to businessman Thomas Neely Jr., founder and president of Neely's Land Company. The tract included present day Grain Valley and parts of what are now Stonington and Carthage townships in northwest Missouri. Neely donated land for a school and church in Grain Valley, as well as other buildings in Springfield during his lifetime but his death did not effect its use as a village until 1915 when it became part of Springfield Township.. After World War I, several mills were built along River Road including one by General Electric which still stands today adjacent to Village Hall Square and produces electronic equipment such as radios and televisions. After being abandoned for years due to lack of customers or investment, GE reopened its mill in 1984 with new technology that has allowed it to continue producing high-quality products until recently despite competition from Japanese manufacturers.. A post office was established at Grain Valley on April 12, 1829; it served residents primarily for mail distribution services until May 3rd 1861 when letter delivery ceased due to Union military operations across the United States.. Grain Valleys' earliest businesses may have been storekeepers operating general Merchandise Emporiums located west side Main Street between First Avenue South and Second Avenue North from about 1830-1840 according to local historian Drury Easley's research into early grain marketing practices.. In 1840 John Smeaton opened an feed store west side First Avenue North also known as Smeaton's Feed Store which continued operation until 1865 when it closed because railroads came through town making transportation easier .. From 1840-1860 Jno $ Henderson ran a grocery store next door to Smeaton's Feed Store on First Avenue North .. By 1860 there were 5 stores open with 360 total retail customers mainly farmers buying eggs & flour etc... male proprietors operated their stores while female proprietors managed their families’ homes ...... By 1870 only 2 stores remained open: One by Paulding family owned by widow Chapman & her son Geo., then run by daughter Anna Fenton under assumed name Liberty Hardware & Lumber since mother died young & this store closed about 1880....... At same time another store building become active: Smith Hardware opened on corner High Street opposite Post Office about 1870....... Another Store opens soon after: Phelps Mercantile became active at this location about 1875.............. In 1885 three moreHardware stores opened downtown: Gentry Mercantile (later renamed Gentry Hardware), Midland Mercantile (later renamed Midland Tool & Die), & Starrett mercantile......... Also that year two schools were established - onegradeschool at Olive Branch Schoolhouse on High Street opposite Postoffice where students studied Mathematics/ Surveying/ Geometry/ Agriculture& Mechanic arts; later Russel Elementary School serving grades K-8 was erected nearby..... By 1889 only 2 hardware stores remained open: One original Gentry Hardware business closed unable to compete with modern technologies while another midtownMercantial Business merged into Russel Elementary School......... On January 15th 1890 Indian Removal Act forced most locals off their property leaving behind just a few hundred Residents living within boundaries still existent today

Grain Valley was a small town in southern Missouri that was known for its corn and wheat production. The first farmers in the area started farming in the 1850s, and by 1860, Grain Valley had a population of about fifty people. The town continued to grow until the early 1900s, when it peaked with around one hundred residents. However, due to the onset of World War I and other factors, Grain Valley slowly declined over the next few years. By 1920, only ten people lived in Grain Valley; by 1930, only five remained. By 1940, there were no residents left in Grain Valley except for a handful of retirees living on a farmstead outside of town. In 1950, all but one inhabitant of Grain Valley died; by 1960, there were still no survivors remaining in the town.) During its time as a small community, Grain Valley served as an important link between southern Missouri and Illinois. As both states experienced rapid growth during the late 1800s and early 1900s – thanks in part to railways – grain became an important commodity within these regions. Because of this correlation, grain production played an essential role within local economies throughout much of southern Missouri during this period. Additionally, because grain is such an agriculturally based product – meaning that it requires significant inputs (such as water) to produce – flour production was also highly dependent on local resources at times. This led to some interesting juxtapositions within local communities: For example, while many Corn Belt villages developed into large cities after World War II due to overwhelming demand for flour from postwar Japan (due largely to food shortages), Grain Valleys residents retained their rural sympathies throughout much of this time frame. Despite these challenges – which included dwindling resources and competition from other agricultural products – grains continue to be an important component of southeastern Missouri society today. In fact, while most towns have since passed away or been abandoned entirely (save for a couple scattered settlements), grain remains firmly embedded within many aspects of southeastern lifebloods such as agriculture and culinary traditions (e.g., cornbread).
The first European to visit the area was a French trader, Pierre-Jacques Marquette in 1763. He explored the region and named it for his old friend, Louis Joliet. The area was part of the Shawnee Nation until 1803 when they ceded it to the United States. In 1819, General James K. Polk invaded Missouri and named it after him in order to help settle claims by other US military commanders. Grain Valley became a town on July 1, 1821, when settlers arrived from Illinois. It grew rapidly due to its strategic location and its access to natural resources such as coal and limestone. The town had a population of about 2,000 people by 1830. By 1840, Grain Valley had become an agricultural center with over 10 miles of road connecting it to other settlements throughout the state. By 1860, grain farming was no longer the primary focus of the town's economy; manufacturing had become more popular in this time period. Grain Valley experienced significant growth during World War II because of its proximity to munitions production plants and allied forces stationed in nearby Kansas City and St Joseph
