Grain Valley, MO is a small town located in the northwest corner of Missouri. It was founded in 1836 by farmers who grew corn and wheat on their properties. The townspeople created a post office in 1841, and started selling goods to other towns in the area. By 1860, Grain Valley had a population of 100 people. In 1870, the railroads came through the area and made grain transportation more efficient, which led to an increase in the population to 300 people by 1880. By 1930, Grain Valley had grown to its current size of 1,600 people. The local military deployment history began during World War II when the United States Army established Camp 208 within the limits of Grain Valley on July 5th 1945. On October 15th 1946, Camp 208 was renamed Fort Riley after General George Custer (1863-1947) who fought at Little Bighorn Battlefield where he was severely wounded on July 25th 1865. The USArmy garrisoned Fort Riley until it was decommissioned on September 9th 1953 and all equipment and personnel were transferred to Peoria IL where they remain today as part of that community's military history. During World War II, Camp 208 housed over 7,000 soldiers from across the United States including approximately 1,500 Soldiers from Missouri who served under Colonel John Sibley (1892-1975). Colonel Sibley commanded 3rd Brigade Combat Team 4th Infantry Division during Operations Neptune’s Spear (December 1944 - January 1945), Liberator Assault (March - May 1945), Andalusia Operation (July -August 1945), Rhineland Offensive (October - November 1945), Central Europe Offensive/Operation Market Garden (November 1945 - December 1946). Many Moormen received battlefield commendations such as citations for heroism or distinction while serving at Camp208 including: First Lieutenant Cecil Dickey Jr., Second Lieutenant Donnel Pritchett III., Sergeant Roy Jantzowiak*, Private First Class Lloyd Thomas* (*First Class Thomas has since passed away). Sgt James “Jax” Hensley also receiving recognition for his actions during WWII with a Bronze Star Medal awarded him for heroism under heavy enemy fire near Kasserfeldt Forest about 2 miles north of Doeheim concentration camp northeast of Ambergtal village eastof Wurzburg Germany on April 61945(*Hensley died in early 2006).
