A detachment from 5th Wisconsin Mounted Riflemen also served as part of this brigade under Colonel Augustus Stowe until September 1862 when he resigned his commission and returned home due to ill health. After Broughton's departure there was little combat activity led by the 1st Brigade until October 6 when they took part in a cavalry expedition against Confederate forces near Cairo JunctionMO.. After days of skirmishing they finally captured two flags which represented Confederate General Robert E Lee's headquarters within minutes!
