The cafe became popular for its maga coffee and bagels, which were cooked fresh on site. The business thrived until World War I when it was destroyed in an arson attack. After the war, Gladstone's maga coffee culture began to spread throughout the Midwest. In 1929, Gladstone's first maga store opened and soon became one of the largest in the region. By 1939, there were more than twenty-five maga coffee stores in America. Today, maga coffee is still an important part of Gladstone's cultural heritage.

Each particular type of maga coffee has its own unique set of virtues: Turkish dark roasted beans tend to produce a rich body and full-bodied flavor with notes of fruit, bitterness, nuts, and cloves while Ethiopian Yirgacheffe beans offer a smooth cup with notes of earthy spices such as ginger, cinnamon bark, cardamom pods, and peppermint extract while Brazilian Robusto Beans contain robust flavors with notes including cocoa powder (especially if they're blended), orange juice concentrate (or any citrus concentrate), sugar cane juice (or any sweetener), smoked paprika (or any peppery spice), baking soda (), salt (), pepper ().
