The National Guard of Fulton, Missouri was first organized on November 15, 1874. The unit was called the Second Brigade, First Division of the Missouri Volunteer Militia. The brigade was disbanded in 1875, and the division was reorganized as the Fourth Brigade, First Division on February 9th, 1876. The brigade was renamed to the Eighth Infantry Regiment on October 1st, 1886. The regiment served in World War I from April 1915 to November 1918. In 1919 the regiment formed a nucleus for a new brigade which became known as the Sixth Infantry Brigade and later became Fifth Infantry Brigade before finally becoming Third Infantry Brigade in 1984. In 2000-2001 there were changes to how gift history is reported within the National Guard in Fulton area so that individual regiments are now detailed herein with their current lineage and organization (eighth infantry regiment 1914-1918; sixth infantry brigade 1964-1984). Furthermore it has been determined that many of these organizations - e.g., brigades - have since disbanded or changed name multiple times (eighth infantry regiment 1916-2000; sixth infantry brigade 1984-2000). Fulton, Missouri is a city in St. Francois County, Missouri, United States. The population was 6,957 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area. Fulton was first settled in 1853 and named for Sir George Fulton, an Englishman who had discovered oil in this region. The town was platted in 1855 and began to grow rapidly due to its natural resources: coal and oil wells were drilled here soon after being founded. After World War II the town became a bedroom community for Kansas City; however, it has continued to grow steadily since then as a center for technology and education. In addition to its downtown district which includes many local businesses and government buildings dating back to the early 19th century, Fulton also has several neighborhoods including Haggerty Heights, Belleview-Reston Hills, Maplewood-Edgewood and Douglas-Easton Hills.

Fulton was founded in 1836 by Capt. Joseph Caldwell Fulton and his wife Rachel as a small farming town on the east bank of the Missouri River. The town quickly grew, reaching its current size by 1845. By 1870, Fulton had become an important transportation center for the region, due to its location on the river and its position as a stop on the Illinois Central Railroad. In 1873, Fulton became part of St. Louis County and was renamed after Samuel D. Fulton, Sr., one of its founders. The city experienced rapid growth during the late 19th century and early 20th century, culminating in its incorporation as a city in 1907. During World War II, Fulton played an important role in providing food production for military forces in St. Louis County. After the war, Fulton underwent significant redevelopment which has brought new life to the city throughout recent decades.
