Fulton is a town in St. Francois County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. Fulton was platted in 1837 and named for General James Fulton, who had served as a Union general during the American Civil War. Fulton is located at (38.915446, -92.547973). It bordered the towns of Carthage and West Plains on the east and west sides respectively. According to the 2010 census, Fulton has a total area of , of which is land and (1.2%) is water. The village of Carthage lies acrossriver from Fulton on the north side of River Oconee just east of Interstate 70 between exits 113A and 113B. According to 2006 estimates by MOBIUS-St Louis Regional Planning Commission,[1] Carthage's population was 3,902 while that of West Plains was 1,771.[2] This make up an area that would encompass about one-seventh all of St. Francois County combined when including both villages; however no effort has been made to bring these two communities together since they are both part of neighboring Scott Township! The municipalities immediately adjacent to Fulton include Scott Township on the east side[3], New Madrid Township on the south side[4], and far western Dunklin Township on Illinois Route 150 just north of I-70 exit 114B/Old US Highway 36 road junction also known as "Dunklin", with a population estimate prior to 2000 ranging from 2,500 – 5,000 residents according to MOBIUS data[5]. It should be noted that there are few if any physical boundaries between these various jurisdictions other than Interstate 70! This lackadaisical approach likely results in more interaction between these entities than if they were each effectively separate jurisdictions with their own borders & governing structures!
