In 1837, the Fulton family built a sawmill on the confluence of the Missouri and Illinois Rivers. The mill continued to be operational until 1902. The first post office in Fulton was established in 1838. By 1840, the population of Fulton had reached 100 people. In 1851, a train depot was built on Main Street and it served as a transportation hub for the area until it burned down in 1906. Fulton experienced heavy growth during the late 1800s thanks to its location at the intersection of two major rivers and its ability to ship goods by way of water transport. The town rapidly became known for its fine clothing exports, which helped contribute to increased economic development within Dearborn County. However, by 1920s Fulton had lost much of its prominence due to numerous changes in technology and industry that led to declines in demand for clothing exports from Illinois and Michigan
