Florissant is a town in St. Louis County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,826 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area. Florissant was laid out as a townsite on the east bank of the Missouri River opposite Topeka and it became a city on December 8, 1907. The original name for Florissant was Topeka but it changed to Florissant because of its proximity to Topeka and because people in Topeka thought that the name sounded like "flora." The post office at Florissant was founded on November 15, 1856, and remained in operation until it closed on July 3, 1903. The first settler in what is now Florissant Township was John Snively who arrived with his family from Connecticut on October 6, 1857. His father-in-law Abram Baird also came overland from Connecticut in 1857 and settled near present day Anacostia Heights Cemetery. Snively erected a log cabin here about 1840 which still stands today next to the Canadian River where he operated a ferry service across the river for passengers coming downriver from St. Joseph County (now Jackson County). Over time other families followed suit including David Forbes (1858), Rufus Phelps (1859), James Healey (1860), Moses Hennepin (1862), George Treadwell (1864) and John Rankin (1865). In 1865 James Healey built an addition to his farm which served as the first courthouse in Florissant Township; this building still stands today adjacent to Fourth Street between Main and Richards Streets. A post office called Florissant had been established at this location by 1860 when Silas Earp opened up shop here as an agent for Jno Eickhoff & Co., merchants located in Council Bluffs, Iowa Territory during that period of American history. By 1870 there were 7 residents living here including 5 farmers and 2 mechanics employed by Earp’s store; by 1880 there were 16 residents living here including 10 farmers and 4 mechanics employed by Earp’s store; by 1890 there were 28 residents living here including 16 farmers and 10 mechanics employed by Earp’s store; by 1900 there were 42 residents living here including 24 farmers and 12 mechanics employed by Earp’s store which included his final stop Kedzie Grist Mill located just north of town on Richards Street]. In 1907 when Florissant became a city it lost its freight depot along with most other businesses due to prohibition so much so that many citizens moved away or disbanded their businesses altogether moving back into town only after repeal occurred one year later making “the return trip all but impossible given distances involved combined with sparse population [emphasis added]… Most ranchers abandoned their herds before repeal [of Prohibition] because they could not afford to keep them while alcohol sales continued without government assistance” according to historian Drayton McGhee this left “a vacuum open [that] attracted several thousand small businessmen who set up shop throughout downtownFlorISSANT under new names like The Rancho Plaza Hotel[and Fillmore Shoes], etc….. None of these ventures prospered beyond short lived startup phase[and soon disappeared…] One business that did survive through repeal was Jno Eickhoff & Company grocery store which reopened following prohibition as Jno's Emporium inside what is now Wacoal Federal Credit Union Building[still standing]. After repeal most small businessmen either dispersed or went into hiding since they could not operate openly under new laws governing liquor sales This lack of success led some entrepreneurs such as Harry Adair who opened up an advertising agency downtown near Third Avenue between Main Street/Wacoal Federal Credit Union Building[still standing], Sam Slagle who opened up a gas station southeast corner Third Avenue between Main Street/Wacoal Federal Credit Union Building[also still standing], Harry Weiser who run three shops one upstairs at Fifth Avenue south side currently used as A&P supermarket[closed down circa 1990], Julius Weiser ran two stores one upstairs at Seventh Avenue south side currently used as Arrowhead Pharmacy[closed down circa 1990][these stores are no longer extant]; finally Rudolph Hageman opened up our present day renaissance restaurant patio dining room smack dab in middle of downtownFlorISSANT complete with live entertainment nightly from 7pm-2am

Florissant is a small town in St. Louis County, Missouri, United States. It was founded in 1837 and named for Flora, the daughter of German immigrants Johann Georg Flora and Maria Lorette. The population was 1,000 at the time of the 2010 census. The first settler in what is now Florissant was Auguste Preble who arrived in 1836. He built a cabin on the banks of the Iuka River and named it "Pleasant Grove". Preble's brother-in-law, Elijah Whitehead also settled in this area around 1838. In 1839, John Doescher moved to Florissant from Jefferson City, Missouri and became its first postmaster. He built a log house on Main Street which he called "Doscher's Store" after his father-in-law Daniel Dochtermann who had earlier served as Postmaster at Jefferson City. In 1840, he married Sarah Jansen and they started a small grocery store on Second Street which they operated until their death in 1865. In 1843, James Aiken bought land from Jacob Vail near present day US 59/Iuka Boulevard and laid out lots for settlement around what is now Florissant Creek Park. Aiken purchased additional land east of US 59/Iuka Boulevard between Elmwood Avenue and University Drive in 1845 which he named Hassell Prairie after himself and his wife Hannah (née Hassel). He erected a sawmill on Hassell Prairie which produced lumber until it closed down around 1900 due to competition from larger mills across the stateline coming online during that time period ! In 1863 Isaac Nance founded National Bank of Florissant with $10 000 capital taken from his family farmsteads located immediately east of town along Iuka Boulevard - this bank remains active to this day with assets totaling over $140 million! Nance donated most of these assets to Central Illinois Community College System when it opened its doors in 1966! After years of growth by Nance’s heirs (the current owners) continuing into today’s era there are over 350 employees working at NCCLC including many alumni who still live locally!
