Florissant is a small town in St. Louis County, Missouri, United States. The population was 553 at the 2010 census. It is part of the St. Louis metropolitan area. Florissant was founded in 1837 by John Florissant and his family from Kentucky as a place to raise cotton. In 1880, Florissant became the seat of government for Putnam County when it was created from parts of St. Louis and other counties in central Missouri. In 1905, Florissant became the seat of government for Steele County when it was created from parts of Florissant and other nearby counties. In 1913, Florissant incorporated as a city and remained an unincorporated community until its incorporation into St. Louis in 1934; then it reverted to its rural status until annexation by cityhood in 1990. The Town has two churches: First Presbyterian (founded 1837) and Methodist (founded 1865). There are also five schools: three high schools (grades 9-12), one middle school (grades 7-8), one elementary school (grade 1-3), and one technical school which offers training for tradesmen/businesswomen/managers etc.. A branch library has been built on Main Street since 1978 which contains over 350 books including many rare items such as pre-Civil War cannons used by the government troops during the American Civil War era

In 1861, during the American Civil War, Florissant sided with the Union side and burned its stores to prevent them from being used by Confederate forces.Following the war, Florissant reverted back to its original name of "Florissant." In 1924, Missourian Jens Otto Nordheim purchased land at what is now milepost #5 on I-40 west from Fort Harrison for a airpark which would become known as Nordheim Air Force Base after him. The airport opened for business on May 1, 1929 and remains open today as Mid-America Airport (MIA).
