Florissant was a town in St. Francois County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,512 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area and is the 6th most populous city in Missouri. Florissant was founded by German immigrants in 1836. The first settler in Florissant was Wilhelm Klingberg, who arrived on March 16, 1836. He and his family built a cabin on a bluff overlooking the Florissant River. In 1837, Klingberg sold his land to John Sulivan and James Sheppard for $1 per acre (0.50 hectare). In 1838, Sheppard donated two acres (0.8 km2) of land to the Methodist Episcopal Church; this site became known as Sheppard's Hill after him. The town charter was granted on October 10, 1840 by Governor John Belcher to Peter Kapp and Johann Friedrich Kuhlmann as trustees for their respective families with power to create roads, build stores and houses "for the use of all citizens." Kapp built a log cabin on what is now First Street near present-day State Route 52 about one mile west of town center in1841-42; he named it "Kapp's Grove". A post office called Florissant opened in December 1846; its original operator was John Wiser from neighboring Pawnee Mission Station (now Independence). At that time there were no schools within Florissant limits; pupils traveled 9 miles (14 kilometers) away each way to receive education at Pawnee Mission School until 1861 when that school closed due to financial difficulties. When Territorial Govt organized county seat move from Shawneetown to Joplin in 1865, Florissant remained unincorporated until 1870 when it became part of Joplin Township under territorial control as part of that community's growth into an Iowa Territory capital city during the late 1860s and early 1870s following adjacent Sioux Agency territory acquisition eastward from Shawneetown during those years beneath General Order No.#6 issued by Ulysses S Grant on November 29th 1862 via Executive Order No.#8 which ordered all Native American Affairs within Indian Territory be supervised by military commanders acting pursuant thereto under jurisdiction thereof subject only to President Abraham Lincoln's Commanding Generalcy over Army troops stationed therein – including authority over agency tribal members living east of Canadian River – ceded lands comprising present day FlorISSANT townshipvenants were entered into between aforesaid General Order #6 administrators David Wilcox & Albert Bender thru Indian Agent David Ransom also residing hereinon January 4th 1870’….At that time there were no streets or incorporated buildings withinFlorissants limits;Pupils traveled 9 miles (14 kilometers) away each way to receive education at Pawnee Mission School until 1861 when that school closed due to financial difficulties………Jefferson Davis Woodring served as Mayor pro tempore from early 1880s through 1890s….. By 1899 only 2 businesses still operated withinFlorissant limits: Salty Springs Feed & Grain Store & Post Office
Florissant was founded in 1837 by John Tulip and his wife, Nancy. The town was named for the flower tulips that grew in the area. It was originally a small community of about fifty residents. In 1853, Florissant became a county seat and it has remained that way ever since. The town is currently home to about three hundred residents.
