The town was founded in 1837 by General James K. Polk and named for his father, Floridian George Polk Sr. The first post office opened in 1840. In 1861, Florissant became part of St. Louis County and the ZIP Code was changed from 63101 to 63118. In 1984, Florissant voters passed a referendum approving annexation by the city of Ferguson after residents there refused to leave their communities for a smaller town with no history or services offered within 24 hours of their request. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all land. As of the census of 2000, there were 7,582 people, 2,813 households, and 1,906 families residing in the town; the population density was 1,627 people per square mile (598/km²). There were 3,023 housing units at an average density of 582 per square mile (234/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 97% white (74% European), 0% black orAfrican American; 0% Native American; 1% Asian; 0% Pacific Islander; and 2% from two or more races. Florissant was founded in 1871 by Isabella Low and her husband John Low. In 1865, Major General Edmund Kirby Smith reported that Florissant had become "the most promising place on the Kansas-Missouri border for settlement." As early as 1870, residents of Florissant were petitioning to be annexed into Springfield. On November 3rd, 1871, a vote was taken to annex Florissant and it was annexed on December 12th of that year. In 1875, there were only 100 people living in Florissant when Judge George Prentice laid out the town block called "The Green". He named it after his father's home state of Ohio – "The Green" being a reference to some woods east of town which used to support large tracts of timber. By 1880, there were 1,500 residents in Florissant with many coming from nearby counties such as Ferguson and Perryville who had been farmers until moving into town during the technological boom times caused by new railroads coming through Springfield and Carbondale (now Chicago). The first post office opened in 1876 and continued serving until 1942 when it moved to neighboring Hannibal due to an increase in mail volume from those two cities combined! A Carnegie Library was built between 1911 and 1913 within sight of present day Main Street/Route 66 although its original construction can still be seen from across Route 66 northbound just past US-131 where you'll see an old checkerboarded road gatehouse lying atop some older buildings now used for storage or home staging on one side while another side has been completely rebuilt as a commercial building housing various stores including several pharmacies before finally becoming known as the KFC Supercenter! During World War II much like other towns across America - like Decatur ( Alabama) -Florissant saw heavy military activity with over 40000 men serving in the armed forces during that time period making it one of the most heavily bombed areas in Missouri! One such site impacted directly by Allied bombers were two small businesses located just off Main Street opposite where KFC currently stands; both businesses were destroyed resulting in dozens if not hundreds if not thousands of dollars worth damage done both inside and outside their business fronts! It wasn't until after 9/11 did things start changing for Florissant; specifically with regards to crime rates which began slowly but surely decreasing beginning around 2005 concurrent with general economic improvement throughout this area generally speaking throughout St Francois County overall! However even today significant problems remain especially given current demographics which are overwhelmingly Hispanic with low levels of education or formal employment opportunities available for many families within what once would have been considered upper/middle class neighborhoods within our community!
