Wilkinson’s troops destroyed several Indian villages here before being relieved by General Anthony Wayne in 1827. For many years this site served as an important supply stop on Wilkinson’s march across America westward toward Mexico City. When I entered Florissant for my first time last year, I couldn't believe how much had changed since my last visit two years earlier! There are now more interesting places to explore within walking distance than ever before – from trendy boutiques and coffee shops to classic restaurants like Bistro Lulu and La Belle Epoque (both hidden gems). And if you're looking for something specific - there's always plenty to find no matter where you look: antique stores, Judaica stores, gift shops or even used bookstores! Florissant was founded in 1837 by John Florissant and his family. The town is located in St. Francois County, Missouri, about 20 miles east of Springfield. In 1849, the Florissants donated land to the town for a courthouse and school district. The community grew rapidly after it became an incorporated town in 1855. The population reached 5,000 by 1860 and 10,000 by 1870. By 1890, Florissant had a population of 25,000 residents. In 1937, the town was renamed for General George Smedley Butler during World War II as part of the military assistance program to help war-torn countries such as France and Japan. The town has experienced many changes over its history including being annexed by nearby Independence in 1925; becoming a ghost town until 1975 due to rising costs of living; being replaced by Telluride in 1984; and finally being re-established as a small city with its own mayor in 2009. Today, Florissant is home to approximately 15% of theSt Francois County population and is one of the most vibrant communities within the county seat area of Springfield. The first settler in what would become Florissant was John Florissant who moved from Illinois in 1837 along with his wife Sarah (née Kline). They arrived at what is now known as their farmstead on February 3rd1837 which consisted of eighteen acres (71 m²). After planting crops that season they established themselves and their families thereabouts until 1840 when they sold off some acreage near present day Batchelor Road to Wm Jourdain for $500 cash considerations which created what would later become known as "Florissanty." On October 1st 1840 John's oldest son Nathan born at this location also died at age 16 years old shortly after arriving here from Missouri state lines crossing into Illinois near Harper’s Ferry on July 14th1840 while camping with his father upon reaching this location following his journey upriver from Illinois.. 4 infant children were also born at this time: Jameson 9 months January 21st1841; Anna 7 months December 12th1842; Friedrich Wilhelm 8 months March 6th1843; Mary Elizabeth 6 months May 2nd1845 all under 16 yr old at this time having crossed state lines into Missouri prior to reaching this location... Present day house #4 on Batchelor Road where Wm Jourdain lived between 1830-1938 still stands today! There are several interesting stories associated with early settlers such as these: began building log cabins just south side creek bank next door where we stand today This site sat unchallenged until local farmer H C Olson bought it around 1920 when he started clearcutting trees etc onsite starting circa 1916 or 1917 & stopped cedar production bc cedar shortage then ceded property back agian
Florissant was a small town in St. Louis County, Missouri, United States. The population was 2,314 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlement in Florissant was founded by Andrew and Rebecca Griggs on May 25, 1811, as "Newberry". They named their settlement after the Florissant River which they had seen from a distance while travelling through the area. The Griggs family continued to live in Florissant until 1847 when they moved to Tower City because of an agricultural boom in that county. In 1847, Harry Kellar built a log cabin on what is now State Route 159 west of town. In 1850, he married Anna Jane Hogue and began to grow maize for local marketplaces andexport crops to other parts of the country. He also operated a gristmill which ground corn for local markets until 1865. Over time, Kellar became well known in Florissant for his gift of livestock products - particularly horses and cows - which he offered for sale at select farmer's markets throughout the region. Baldwin Fenton organized a company in 1852 to build wagons using iron rails along State Route 42 east of town; this wagon road served as one of the early transportation corridors between Florissant and Springfield across Missouri during its early years. Fenton's company soon became famous nationally for its quality wagons and helped spur growth within both counties over the next several decades as different trade routes opened up between these two areas; with flour becoming available from neighboring Illinois via these new transportation arteries (the Kansas Pacific Railway arrived in earnest nearby in 1861),Florissontransportation costs plummeted leading to increased economic opportunities within both towns during this period."
