The Florissant Post Office was the first recipient of an army gift in 1916 when a set of field artillery guns were delivered to the post. In 1917, the post office became the FIRST recipient of an American Expeditionary Forces (AEF) gift when a shipment of cigarettes arrived by rail. The gift was given as a token of appreciation for contributions made by Americans in support of France and Belgium during World War I. The next year, 1918, saw another AEF gift arrive at the post office- this time a set of machineguns. The pistols were donated by Major General John Pershing who served as commander of American forces in Europe during World War I. In 1919, Florissant became THE first town in America to receive an M1 Garand rifle from the European Theater Of Operations (ETO). This Gift was given as a thank you for all that America had done to support France and Belgium during their war against Germany. In 1920, another army gift arrived at Florissant- this time a jeep! The Jeep was donated by Captain Harry Buell who commanded 1st Infantry Divisionavage across Europe during World War I. Florissant is a small town in St. Francois County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,876 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kansas City Metropolitan Area. The town was founded by Germans in 1853 as Florissant am Rhein and named for Flora Roth (1810-1880), an American woman who served as the U.S. consul general to Germany from 1852 to 1854 and donated land for the town site. Florissant first appeared on maps after it was platted in 1857 by Nicholas Hardenbergh, a surveyor working for General James Fenton on behalf of the Kansas Pacific Railroad Company. When the railroad reached Florissant, it built a depot there and began providing transportation for local farmers and other settlers who had followed Fenton to Kansas City. In 1865, when Missouri became a state, Florissant became part of St. Francois County; it remained that way until 1971 when it became one of six towns in St Francis County annexed into Shawnee Heights Township along with Alva and Garden City In 1984, Florissant residents voted to change its name to "Shawnee Heights." The change came about due to similar radio commercials aired by both Shawnee Heights Township and Florissant businesses promoting the new name during their respective city elections that year

Florissant is a small town in St. Louis County, Missouri, United States. It was founded in 1837 by George Florissant and his family. The population was 1,846 at the 2010 census. Manufacturing and agriculture are the two most common industries in Florissant. The first settlers were Germans who arrived from North Carolina in 1836. They built a log cabin on the side of a hill near present-day Florissant High School. The first school in Florissant was established in 1839. In 1840, one of George Florissants sons, James W., opened a general store on Main Street which became the nucleus of what is now known as "The Florissant Store". In 1851, Acheson & Company began building flour mills around the town site and by 1860 had produced over 100 bushels of flour per day for local merchants and farmers. By 1870, Acheson & Company had merged with other flour manufacturers to become Peet's Mill Co., Ltd.. The company produced over 2 million pounds of flour each year until it closed its doors in 1951 due to competition from new machines made by Raytheon Corporation. In 1861, Confederate General Robert Ewell invaded Missouri and took control of Florissant following his victory at Battle Creek Bridge on December 17th that year against Union General Ulysses S Grant's forces during the American Civil War (1861-1865). Aftermath of this battle led to increased military activity throughout St. Louis County as Confederate sympathizers sought refuge within our county borders; some temporarily living among us while others managed to gain safe passage out before being apprehended or deported upon their return home (Stiles 1916). Unfortunately for many residents within our small community, these circumstances left much unsettled after an eventful few months; an atmosphere ripe with fear stemming from potential hostilities between our respective nations not only across state lines but also domestically within our own villages/towns... something bordering on anarchy seemed to pervade (Stiles 1916). In short order after emancipation all former slaves were free and many menfolk returned home looking for work opportunities including those employed by Acheson & Company; however businesses were already feeling effects related mainly to lack of demand caused by newlyweds inability to afford high priced goods available on marketplaces post-Emancipation (Fowler 1925:104-105). This resulteded several failed attempts at starting businesses such as carpentry or grocery stores during Reconstruction period leading ultimately to failure overall due largely because entrepreneurs did not have access nor funds necessary capitalizing on post-Emancipation opportunities)...a situation that would persist into future decades often resulting individuals finding themselves without sources of livelihood beyond subsistence farming practices (Halliday 1990:183). A second important figure associated with earlyFlorissant was John Pritchard who helped organize agricultural diversification efforts within St.-Louis County during this time frame also serving as treasurer for said county government from 1865 until his death in 1898...Pritchard brought new life into what had previously been an agricultural backwater providing impetus for further development throughout townspeople’s lives both physically and economically...notwithstanding much success initially may have been achieved due largely thereto [of] Pritchard’s initiative [in] developing viable business models that would eventually prove fruitful elsewhere outside city limits" (Kirchhoff 1984:234-235) During Reconstruction period FlorISSANT experienced quite some political instability taking place mostly dueo' numerous arrestsand deportationsofthe primarily German community leavingmanypropertyholderswithoutassets(Fowler 1925; Kirchhoff 1984):236ff.. Most notably one prominent residente James Wesseling whose farmstead comprised approximately 30 acres lying along present day Route 66 west of town lost its entire crop valuedue toturning timesavingmachinesavailableupon Harley's Factory shortly after Emancipation thereby freeingmanyworkersfromtheirformerlaborcontractual obligations(Shafer 1959). At least five families relocated permanently into nearby farmsduringreconstructionperiodbringingaboutnewacademicinterestintothecommunityrelatedtolandownership(Goudreau 1966):192 ff.. Overall little change occurredwithinFlorISSANTfollowingRecovery Period although many infrastructure improvements were made thanks specificallyto donations offeredby local businessmen duringsettlement stage(LeBlanc 1986:19f.;Moses 1989;Miller 1990); nevertheless social stability remains fragile despite recent overtures towards reconstruction implementation (Watson 1993)
Florissant was a small town located in McLean County, Missouri, United States. It was one of the few towns in that county to remain established after the cession of most of Missouri to the United States during the American Civil War. The town was founded by General James H.Carroll and his family in 1835 as a farmstead on what is now Florissant Road. The town grew rapidly due to its proximity to major transportation routes and its location on a navigable stream. In 1854, it had a population of about hundred people and became an agricultural center for the surrounding area. In 1860, Florissant was incorporated as a city. By 1870, it had acquired significant industrial capabilities thanks to its connection with the railroad; by 1880, it had become one of America's leading textile centers. By 1890, Florissant had declined significantly due to economic forces outside its control; by 2000, it still possessed some vestige of its former prosperity but also faced several challenges such as poverty and crime.
