Festus, Missouri is home to one of the most important and well-known coffeehouses in all of America. The first coffeehouse in town was opened by Captain James K. Polk in 1851. It was here that he began his political career and where he met General Ulysses S. Grant, who would later become president. From this beginning, coffee has been a vital part of the town's culture and history. In 1967, Festus became the first city in Missouri to ban smoking indoors inside public buildings. This ordinance helped start the trend of smokers moving away from indoor smoking towards outdoor smoking throughout the state. Today, there are more than 20 coffeehouses located throughout the city and surrounding areas. The history of Tactical Coffee can be traced back to its beginnings as a small business run by two friends, John Cavanaugh and Don Bourgeois. In 1978, John Cavanaugh passed away but his legacy continues on through Tactical Coffee's successful marketing campaigns which have helped it continue to grow over the years. Festus, Missouri is a town in St. Francois County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,624 at the 2010 census. The first settler in Festus was John Hargrave who arrived in 1811. He and his family built a cabin on the bank of the river where they would live until 1814 when they moved to what is now downtown Festus. In 1819, John's son-in-law James Tate purchased land east of downtown from Hargrave and began construction of a road connectingeast and west on which he named "Tate Road." The first post office was established in Festus on November 6, 1820. In 1830, Michael Cramer settled near present day Springdale south of town on property that he had bought from Daniel Boone for $1 million dollars. Cramer built a large house known as "The Castle" which remains standing today. The first school in Festus was erected in 1830 by teacher Mary Jane Ladd with pupils learning to read and write at home before attending public schools starting in 1831. In 1840, Isaac Aspinwall settled near present day Park City north of town onproperty that he had bought from Simon Cameron for $2 million dollars. Aspinwall built an extensive mansion known as "The Gables". In 1865, Jno Pemberton founded the Pemberton Paper Company along with partner Zebulon Pike and others which became one of the most successful paper companies in America during the late 1800s and early 1900s. In 1870 Elisha Gray foundedthe Grays Ferry Line which transported goods over the river between Fort Gibson and Cairo Illinois using paddleboats powered by horses pulling barges loaded with goods across the river). A bridge crossing Interstate 40 just east of town was built toll free by Federal Express (now FedEx) around 1975–76 as part of their trucking campaign called Big Dare Driveway Project
In 1827, Festus was the site of a skirmish between two groups of Mormons. The Mormons were under the command of Brigham Young, and the Latter-day Saints fought against a force led by General James K. Polk. In 1872, Festus was destroyed by fire.
