Festus was a town in Jackson County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,023 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area. The community of Festus was founded by George Washington and James K. Polk on November 3, 1855 as a station on the Santa Fe Railway. The town name comes from Latin "festuca" meaning 'a type of corn Plot'. The first store opened in December 1857 and continued to operate until 1957 when it closed because of financial difficulties brought about by the Great Depression. A post office called Festus was established in March 1860, and remained in operation until May 1970. In 1898, an act of the legislature changed Jackson County's name toFestus County after General James K. Polk who had served as its first sheriff and governor during the Mexican War era. On July 15, 1907, a fire destroyed most of downtown Festus leaving only one block withstanding for over four months before being controlled by firefighters using hoses while they burned building materials that endangered future fires In 1911-1920 three separate floods cut off communications between Kansas City and Festus so much so that farmers were able to send help only after dayslong rides into town; this led to what is now known as "the four-day famine." In 1928–1929 construction began on what would become known as Riverfront Park which included an amusement park,, tennis courts,, a swimming pool,, and two hotels/motels plus numerous other businesses including several banks . After years of planning it finally opened in 1934 with attendance topping 150,000 people each day making it one ofJackson County's largest tourist attractions . The park has since been redeveloped multiple times with new buildings added such as a convention center ,an arena etc but most recently became home to Kansas City Chiefs football games humanitys version of professional sports
