The history of the Navy in Festus, Missouri goes back to 1851. The first navy ship called "Festus" was built here in 1851 by David Fenton. The townspeople donated the ship and she served as a storehouse for local goods until 1861 when the Union army moved into town and burned all of the stores. In 1865, USS Constitution was launched from Fortress Monroe and arrived at Fort Donelson, Tennessee to support General Sherman's march on Atlanta. Constitution ran low on fuel while on a journey through Missouri, so Captain Amos Kendall diverted her to enter Lexington, Kentucky where she relieved USS Constitution underpowered offloading at King's Landing Shipyard. Both ships were then towed back into Mobile Bay and repaired before they sailed for Charleston, South Carolina in February 1867. There they underwent another refit including new masts and rigging which made them more seaworthy for service in the Confederate navy. In 1870 USS Constitution sailed to Havana with Admiral Porter to evacuate American citizens during the Cuban Revolution. She arrived safely at Key West two days later after encountering only scattered gunfire from Spanish batteries along her passage. After his return from Cuba Commodore James Lawrence Washington ordered "Constitution" decommissioned on 9 May 1870 due to lack of funds for another warship build program; she instead became an training ship for naval cadets (US Naval Academy). In November 1886 "Constitution" sailed again with Admiral Porter as part of Rear Admiral John Jervis's squadron during operations against Saigon – one of America's few successful military actions against Vietnam during its conflict with that country.–USS Constitution Museum Foundation

The navy has been gifts to many people over the years. Some of the earliest gifts were given by King George II in 1784 when he presented England's first ship, HMS Beagle, to the Spanish Navy. The navy has also been given many different items over time including submarines, aircraft carriers and even ships that can shoot missiles. One of the most famous gift recipients is Diana, Princess of Wales who was presented with a Royal Naval helicopter in 1988. The navy has also bestowed many honorary titles on individuals such as Admiral Lord Palmerston and Admiral Sir John Radcliffe.
Navy gift history goes back to the early 1800s when Admiral George Dewey founded the United States Naval Academy. The academy was designed to educate naval officers, and it has graduated more admirals than any other institution in America. Today, the navy operates over 1,000 ships and submarines around the world, making it one of America's most powerful militaries.
Festus is a small town in Missouri, located about thirty-six miles southeast of St. Louis. Established in 1847, it was named after Festus Ewing, an early settler and member of the first Masonic Lodge in Missouri. The town experienced growth during the late 1800s and early 1900s as a result of its position along the railroad network. The population peaked at approximately 5,000 in 1910, but has since declined steadily. Today, Festus remains a small community with few residents over the age of fifty-five. One significant aspect of Festus' history is its connection to Freemasonry. It became one of the first towns in Missouri to ordain Freemasons as members in 1892. In addition, Festus is also home to one of two remaining Masonic lodges in Missouri – the Plaza Lodge #3 (established 1888) – which continues to offer instruction and activities for members today. Despite its declining population and limited resources, Festus has managed to maintain some degree of cultural significance throughout its history. For example, it remains one of the few places where you can still experience square dancing – an ancient dance form that combines steps from several different dances into one performance – thanks to the popularity of country music tours that annually visit the town during summertime.
