Festus, Mo., is a small town located in the Ozarks region of Missouri. The population was 2,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield-Springfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1868 by German immigrants, and named for Festus, Germany's first bishop. The community grew rapidly during the early years of the 20th century due to its location on a major route connecting St. Louis with Cairo, Illinois and Kansas City with Omaha, Nebraska. During World War I, Festus became an important post-war military training center for local soldiers and their families. In 1924, Festival Hall—the first municipal building in Festus—was built to accommodate overflow crowds at nearby Girard College's annual concert series. In 1974, Festus voters passed a resolution recognizing African American History Month and setting aside October as that year's monthlong celebration. That same year saw the opening of Festival Hall—now known as Town Hall—an annex to the local high school which had been relocated from its original site in downtown since before Festus' founding. The hall has been home to many different events over the years including concerts by country music stars such as Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings; bluegrass bands like Cumberland County Gospel Choir and Just about Every Friday night; art shows; meetings of the Ozark County Library District board; election day demonstrations; and other civic events typically held in small towns across America. On July 4th each year (beginning in 1977), residents of Festus celebrate Independence Day by hosting an outdoor parade down Main Street followed byfestivities featuring arts & crafts booths from morning until evening throughout downtown streetside areas (including several blocks north of Town Hall). Festus was named for Festus, a centurion in the Roman army who had fought in the Second Punic War. The town was first settled by Dutch settlers in 1795, and became a county seat in 1831. The town was platted on May 10, 1834, by John Stephenson and James Hays. In 1860, Festus was renamed for General Ulysses S. Grant and it took its current name of Festus after him in 1903. The primary industry of Festus is agriculture; however, there are also some small businesses located here that provide services such as printing and publishing. There are also some local churches located in the town which serve as social centers for residents. Some of the larger agricultural businesses include Greene Farms LP (a hog producer), Belle Mead Farm LLC (a dairy farm), and Beech Grove Farms LP (a grain elevator). Festus has a population of around 100 residents; however, it is projected to grow significantly over the next few years due to increased population growth across Missouri statewide as well as an increase in tourism within the area. Additionally, work opportunities within the local economy are expected to continue growing thanks to new technology companies moving intotown over recent years.
